Lower School Learning Specialist
Reports To: Head of Lower School
Job Status: 100% FTE (Monday–Friday, 8-hour shift)
Compensation: $64,000 – $140,000, depending upon experience and education
Start Date: August 5, 2026
OVERVIEW
The San Francisco School is an independent Preschool–8th grade school dedicated to a multicultural and inclusive community. As a Lower School Learning Specialist, you will help cultivate and celebrate the intellectual, imaginative, and humanitarian promise of each student in a collaborative, supportive environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure students are joyfully and safely engaged in classroom activities and outdoor play.
- Support students with academic needs primarily in the area of literacy by designing and implementing one-on-one and small group sessions, and push-in support as appropriate
- Work alongside student support teams and classroom teachers to serve students, teachers, and families
- Collaborate with teachers to develop student learning plans, accommodations, and differentiated instruction and curriculum
- Screen children for learning and developmental differences or interpret outside assessments
- Collaborate and partner with teachers to communicate student needs and progress; recommend outside testing, tutoring, or other indicated special services; and provide case management by partnering with teachers and families
- Participate in student life activities
- Oversee recess or lunch duties as assigned
- Attend all staff meetings
- Engage in professional development and in the SFS professional growth and learning program
- Fulfill all duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Training and experience as a Learning Specialist and/or Reading Specialist
- Special Education Credential and/or an MA in Special Education [preferred]
- Three years minimum experience in elementary education
- Training or certification in Orton-Gillingham (or a comparable program)
- Cultural competence in multicultural classrooms with sensitivity to the needs of children from diverse backgrounds
- Extensive experience with reading instruction in the early grades
- An ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teachers and families
- Familiarity with educational resources in San Francisco is preferred
- Effective communication and facilitation skills
