Head-Royce School

Heads Up Summer Faculty (Math)

Full-Time beginning June 15, 2020 and concluding July 10, 2020

Responsibilities

This is a summer-only middle school position and includes teaching pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry. Candidates should have a strong background in mathematics and experience creating engaging curriculum. Candidates should also possess experience teaching math at the middle school level and a desire to continue working with students this age.

Summer Faculty teach four academic classes and are responsible for writing student evaluations at the end of the summer. A successful candidate has experience with integrating technology and meaningful assessments into their curriculum. Faculty should also be approachable, enthusiastic and committed to serving high-potential students of color from Oakland. 

Qualifications 

All candidates must possess a minimum of two years classroom experience in a middle or high school setting. Two years of independent lead teaching recommended. At minimum, BA degree required. All candidates for this position must have a current first aid and CPR certification by the first day of the program. Candidates should also possess strong interpersonal communication skills and an ability to relate with people from a variety of educational, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. Knowledge of child development, learning styles, curriculum design a plus. Other essential qualities important to the position are the ability to be professional, fun, caring and energetic when necessary.

Heads Up Program Overview 

Heads Up was founded in 1987 as a partnership between the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) and Head-Royce School. For over 25 years, Heads Up has provided low-income students from OUSD with challenging and enriching educational programs to prepare them for academic success and an appreciation for civic involvement. 

Heads Up emphasizes academic growth, continuity, and relationship building through a yearlong program that is free to participants. In addition to the rigorous four-week summer program, Heads Up participants return to campus monthly during the school year to participate in the Saturday Leadership Academy.

Located on a 14-acre campus in the hills of Oakland, California, Head-Royce is a pre-eminent, highly selective, co-educational, independent, K-12 day school with a 126-year history.
