Position Title: Assistant Speech & Debate Director

Full-time/Part-time: Part-time

Classification: Exempt

Reports to: VP for Equity, Inclusion & Belonging; Director of Speech & Debate

Pay Rate: $ 35,000-45,000

Position Summary

Support existing Speech & Debate staff and students in the program by facilitating after school student practices, chaperoning, judging and coaching at weekend tournaments throughout the 2023-24 season (August-May).

Duties and Specific Responsibilities

General

Inspire, motivate, and teach students specific skills related to debate
Build positive character traits and relationships with students
Provide large, small group setting and individualized coaching opportunities
Work closely with and support the Director of Speech & Debate in various aspects of debate programming
Ensure the safety and well being of all students by adhering to all rules and regulations for traveling/representing Presentation HS off campus.
Regularly/Weekly

Attend regular speech and debate practices
Oversee skills-based practices
Support student leaders to conduct practice
Provide curriculum over speech and debate topic(s)/controversy areas, speech and debate skills
Facilitate practice debate rounds/sessions
Support student research
Conduct research on bills, topics as needed
Write briefs summarizing select bills prior to tournament
Conduct generalized debate research
Monthly

Provide chaperone/supervision, coaching, judging duties during weekend tournaments (may be at local, regional & national) as assigned by program director/based on program needs
Average 2 tournaments/month during the season (August 2023 and June 2024)
Other duties as assigned (particularly with regard to tournaments)

Education & Experience

Bachelor Arts Degree
Experience coaching speech & debate
NSDA accreditation or similar professional development
Preferred experience/knowledge of CFL district and CHSSA Speech & Debate

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated organizational skills
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Strong understanding of high school speech and debate competitions

Work Environment / Hours

Approximately 4 afternoons each week (2:30-5:30PM)
Multiple weekend tournaments requiring travel throughout the year
