Dean of Faculty

We seek a highly collaborative, culturally competent, forward-thinking leader to join the School’s senior leadership team. The Dean of Faculty is responsible for the hiring, evaluation, and support of teachers in a culture of growth that upholds The Bay School’s mission and philosophy.

Key Responsibilities: 

1)      School Leadership

  • Collaborates with the Head of School to support a faculty that will fulfill the mission and  the school’s programs in the present while looking ahead to future needs and opportunities
  • Manages the recruitment, hiring, orienting, mentoring, and supervision of teachers with a special emphasis on recruitment and retention of teachers of color
  • Creates opportunities/mechanisms by which faculty concerns can be heard and addressed; ensures the appropriate inclusion of faculty voice or perspective in decision-making
  • Partners with Head of School, Associate Head and CFOO in considering both short-term and long-term staffulty sustainability
  • Lives Bay’s value of diversity, equity, and inclusion by modeling practices and habits of cultural competency/humility
  • Serves in a leadership role on mission-aligned committees devoted to sustainability and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Collaborates with the Human Resources Manager and the CFOO to ensure that the school complies with state and federal laws with regard to employment-related matters
  • Represents the school during after-school and weekend functions

2)      Professional development and growth

  • Supports a faculty culture of innovation, accountability, and growth through classroom observations, coaching, and feedback
  • Aligns professional development goals with school’s mission and values and allocates resources accordingly, assessing and revising these goals at regular intervals
  • Supervises Lead Instructional Coach and leads the vision for coaching and professional development within the school
  • With input from key constituents, co-designs and co-leads staffulty meetings, new staffulty orientation, and opening & closing meetings for the school year
  • Serves as the school’s site supervisor for Folio, ensuring this tool is used to support the growth and development of teachers

 

3)      Faculty Evaluation

  • Collaborates with Head of School, Associate Head of School, Academic Dean, and Department Chairs in further implementing the faculty evaluation instrument
  • Assumes responsibility for the quality of instruction and execution of professional duties
  • Using Bay’s Effective Teaching criteria, oversees the goal-setting process for teachers and observes teachers in service of teacher effectiveness

  • thinks strategically and systemically and has participated in and led groups through organizational change and growth;
  • possesses an advanced degree in her/his academic subject area, Teaching and Learning, or Educational Leadership;
  • understands deeply the life of an independent school teacher;
  • dedicates herself/himself/themselves to anti-bias and equity work, and understands both culturally responsive pedagogy and the social justice dimensions of education;
  • values and models collegial collaboration, feedback, and self-reflection as a means for growth;
  • commits to ongoing professional growth
  • has significant experience
    • in a variety of classroom and educational settings;
    • using diverse pedagogies and educational technologies in service of specific educational outcomes;
    • incorporating mindfulness in an educational setting;
    • working effectively with a range of students, including those with learning differences;
    • thinking broadly and innovatively about curriculum and pedagogy, including project-based and place-based learning;
    • coaching teachers in all disciplines to be successful; and
    • serving effectively in a school leadership or administrative role
