Position Summary
Santa Catalina School, a nationally recognized PreK-12 independent Catholic school in Monterey, California, seeks an experienced graphic designer to join the communications team. The graphic designer, in collaboration with the communications team, creates visually engaging content for marketing and communication projects specific to Santa Catalina constituencies, using a variety of mediums and with a focus on storytelling.

Description

The graphic designer is responsible for the day-to-day management of all interactions with various campus offices, the oversight of their projects, and the creative development and graphic design of print and digital materials in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications. Additionally, the graphic designer photographs school activities and events as assigned, and provides photo editing as needed. The graphic designer is responsible for maintaining positive interdepartmental relationships and managing all project requests through to completion. The ideal candidate would possess a demonstrated record of success as a graphic designer in creative, detail-oriented, and highly organized positions.

 

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, this individual must also be able to balance the overall needs of the school, with regard to design, content, and communications goals, as they play a key role in ensuring that all designs are aligned with Santa Catalina branding and marketing standards. The position supports the school, its values, and its leadership.

Graphic design responsibilities include:

●       Produce designs for brochures, print and digital advertisements, posters and banners, digital displays, flyers, social media graphics, and other publications as needed

●        Assist with the production of the bi-annual magazine including layout, photo editing, and typesetting

●       Collaborate on design strategies and develop good working relationships throughout campus to provide the best result for each department and the school

●        Consult on color, images, text style, and layout for department projects by way of an understanding of core design elements such as type, contrast, alignment, proximity, and layout

●       Work with the director to produce unique and innovative designs while ensuring that all designs are aligned with the school’s marketing and branding standards and key messages

●       Review and edit designs prior to publication

●       Prep and package native production files for print

Photography responsibilities include:

●       Collaborate with the director and assistant director to identify, plan, and  photograph school activities, events, and campus life (on and off campus, and sometimes after hours)

●       Edit photos for use on the website, social media, and digital and print communications

Project management responsibilities include:

●       Act as the department liaison to gain information necessary to execute and complete projects

●       Assume all tracking and coordinating responsibility for each job request from its initiation to completion

●       Work closely with the project team to maintain up-to-date knowledge of all projects and deadlines

●       Procure all items needed for project execution and completion

●       Identify and resolve any potential issues related to projects, consulting with the director as needed

●       Ensure all processes and procedures are followed and completed in a timely fashion

●       Work with the director to ensure each project is high-quality, meets strategic marketing and communications goals, and is consistent with the school’s brand and messaging

Other responsibilities include:

●       Assist with website and digital projects as needed and requested by the director

●       Perform administrative duties as needed and requested by the director

●       Stay current on trends in marketing and communication best practices in independent schools

●       Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

●       Bachelor’s degree is required

●       3 to 5 years experience in a similar role

●       Expert  use of InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premier

●       Proficient use of Illustrator and Acrobat Pro

●       Skilled photographer and comfortable using a DSLR camera

●       Highly skilled in producing and editing photos

●       Strong editorial and layout abilities, including design and typesetting

●       Knowledge and experience with print publications and the print process

●       Technical competence regarding print and digital communication projects

●       Knowledge and experience using Smartsheet (project and work management platform)

●       A commitment to the mission and identity of Santa Catalina School

●       A desire to participate fully in the Santa Catalina community

●       Successful completion of a LiveScan criminal background check as required by law

Supervisory Responsibilities

●       This position does not supervise other employees.

Working Conditions and Compensation

●       Be able to sit and meet with colleagues for extended periods of time each day

●       Work at a desk and computer screen for extended periods of time each day

●       Ability to access buildings and facilities through a 36-acre campus, with reasonable accommodations, in order to meet with students and employees

●       Ability to work in various positions, including, but not limited to, standing, bending over, crouching, sitting, reaching, and needing to lift up to 50 lbs.

●       Work in a school environment with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and people

●       The designer may be required to travel on occasion to attend conferences or school events and must be able to schedule this travel based on the priorities of the school

●       Santa Catalina School offers competitive insurance and retirement benefits

●       Salary Range: $26.00 to $29.00 hourly, depending on experience
