Northern Light School (NLS) is an independent, coeducational school serving students in
Preschool to 8th grade. Our mission is to provide an empowering education for children from
all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, with the understanding that rigorous academics
alone are insufficient to prepare our students for success in a rapidly changing world. Our small
class sizes (capped at 20) ensure that students have the opportunity to practice problem
solving, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning, while expressing their knowledge in creative
and critical ways. Northern Light is deeply committed to social justice, and the importance of

Position Description:
NLS is searching for an experienced and engaged 1st grade teacher to join our
passionate community of educators and learners for the upcoming calendar year. The position is
full-time and offers a salary commensurate with experience, along with a comprehensive
benefits package. Familiarity with inquiry-based and culturally responsive teaching is a
requirement for the position.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Master’s degree and/or Credential in Education Preferred
• 2+ years of teaching 1st grade (or equivalent Elementary School experience)
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• Familiarity with child development and teaching in diverse schools
General Duties and Responsibilities:
• Create lessons that support skill-building and experiential learning across writing,
literacy, math, the arts, and other key disciplinary areas
• Center socio-emotional learning, social justice and community-building practices across
the curriculum
• Differentiate instruction for students based on their educational needs and abilities
• Use available technology and instructional media to enhance students’ learning
experiences
• Foster and maintain a safe, inclusive, and nurturing classroom environment where
students are engaged and demonstrate mutual respect
• Engage parents and guardians in the education of their children
• Be alert at all times by providing proper visual supervision
• Plan, supervise, and implement the curriculum in accordance with our policies and
procedures
• Responsible for the ordered arrangement, appearance, and décor of the classroom
environment
• Attend all staff meetings, including grade-level meetings, and in-house training programs
• Regularly maintains classroom bulletin boards displaying all aspects of the Curriculum
• Monitor and assess student progress
• Maintain close communication with the HOS/ Student Director and parents regarding
student issues, conferencing as deemed necessary
• Participation in all school events
• Perform daily tasks and responsibilities with integrity, making effective use of time
schedules and not requiring constant reminders to complete tasks
