Urban seeks an energetic and creative teacher with genuine enthusiasm for working with high school students starting August 15th 2024. Classes will include a combination of our core curriculum for 9th and 10th graders, as well as upper level electives for 11th and 12th graders such as Poetry and Creative Nonfiction, or other classes based on expertise. This is a part-time position which includes teaching 5 sections across the year (55.5% of a full time role).

Candidates should have:

  • Previous teaching experience, ideally at the high school level
  • Experience in curriculum development
  • An understanding of learning development and the needs of adolescents
  • A desire to collaborate with colleagues who teach the same courses

The English Curriculum at Urban:

The primary goal of the English curriculum is to develop appreciation for the joys and possibilities of literary expression. A central feature of our courses is the close reading and discussion of literature – a form of critical inquiry that supports and honors diverse points of view and varieties of interpretation. Our other primary task is writing, with the goal of developing not only the student’s competence, but their voice as well. Students leave Urban with a sense of themselves as thinkers and writers, thoughtful and reflective, and capable in expressing both their critical and creative sensibilities through their writing.

Salary and Benefits

The anticipated salary range the School reasonably expects to pay candidates for the position of Part Time Faculty Member teaching 5 classes in San Francisco is $50,278 to $84,389 annually.

This part time position includes the opportunity to participate extensively in Urban’s teaching community, to collaborate with colleagues on curriculum development and pedagogy, and to benefit from Urban’s professional development program. Additionally, Urban provides all full-time and part-time employees teaching 4 or more classes or working more than 20 hours per week a generous benefits package including employer-paid medical and dental coverage.
