Salary Range:$103,750.00 To $168,250.00 Annually

Urban School of San Francisco seeks an energetic History Department Chair to lead the department and teach 9th grade world history, 10th/11th grade American History and electives such as Civics, Constitutional Law, or other courses based on expertise and experience.

The school is looking for a dynamic, creative teacher who has enthusiasm for working with high school students, a commitment to innovative pedagogy and collaboration with colleagues, a commitment to equity pedagogy, and to their own continued professional growth. Ideal candidates should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in History, curriculum development experience, at least two years experience teaching history or social studies at the secondary level, and previous experience as a Dept. Chair or teacher leader.

At Urban, we want and expect our students to be active historians. Our History Department is committed to helping students develop intellectual curiosity and critical engagement by understanding the complexities of the past and its implications for our present and future. Our program encourages students to approach historical inquiry with rigor and nuance, equipping them with the analytical tools to evaluate diverse sources and perspectives. Students learn to craft well-reasoned historical arguments through close reading of primary and secondary texts in a collaborative learning environment that prioritizes thoughtful discussion, active listening, and evidence-based interpretation.

A full time teacher at Urban is also expected to be an advisor for a group of 10-12 students, serving as their advocate, mentor and academic advisor, and accompanying them on class trips. We try to assign new teachers to Urban to an advising group in their second year.
