Middle School Math Teacher

Starting August 2024

The Position

The Nueva School seeks a Middle School math teacher. Well-qualified candidates will be creative, energetic, and passionate people with experience implementing curriculum that emphasizes a constructivist, student-centered pedagogical approach. Candidates will be excited to collaborate about mathematics with students and colleagues, including daily short-term work and long-term projects. They will have experience collaboratively developing, adapting, and implementing curriculum to appropriately challenge students with varied experiences and abilities. They will have a strong content and pedagogical background allowing them to support students in discovering and applying concepts, along with improving problem-solving abilities. They will have experience teaching high school level math concepts.  Our full-time teachers also participate in the middle school by being an advisor, teaching a quarter of electives or coaching, supporting our DEI work, and doing student supervision duties.

General Responsibilities for Teachers in the Middle School Division

§  Lead by example in commitment to Nueva’s mission: “Our school community inspires passion for lifelong learning, fosters social and emotional acuity, and develops the student’s imaginative mind.”

§  Develop and expertly teach the course of study with the highest standards for each student; full time teachers teach four sections, with one to three preps

§  Serve as an advisor to students; full time teachers advise a group of 8-12 students each year

§  Design instruction that emphasizes critical thinking and problem solving

§  Engage in the life of the school by chaperoning trips and events, supporting students through supervisory duties, serving on committees, and attending meetings to collaborate about student success

§  Share enthusiasm for content and intellectual inquiry by teaching an elective for one quarter annually

§  Lead a workshop in preparation for our grade-level trips or an exploration of community building with groups of students (Grade Level Time)

§  Support community building by leading “Mav Dives” activities that emphasize fun, creativity, and connection

§  Co-lead a “lit club” class

§  Write narrative evaluations quarterly (Nueva does not give grade in middle school)

Qualifications and Responsibilities for Math Teachers in the Middle School Division

§  Experience teaching child-centered lessons

§  Experience developing open-ended activities

§  Experience teaching 6th through 9th grade math content; additional high school experience might be a bonus

§  Enjoys developing challenge problems and projects

§  Ability to develop lessons by curating problems from a variety of sources, including developing one’s own problems; Nueva does not use textbooks to teach math

§  Ability to create assessments using standards-based grading

A Successful Candidate Demonstrates the Ability to

§  Work with gifted learners and learn more about this population

§  Collaborate with colleagues in the development and execution of curriculum and instruction both within the discipline and across disciplines

§  Create hands-on, project-based learning experiences

§  Form a collaborative and effective partnership with families, students and colleagues

§  Model flexibility in implementing best learning practices

§  Support the development of the whole child in the classroom, with particular attention to the social and emotional development of the students

§  Implement accommodation plans for students

§  Demonstrate a commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion through pedagogy and incorporate an anti-racist and anti-oppressive lens into teaching practice

§  Integrate appropriate technology to enhance learning

Position Qualifications

§  Bachelor’s or advanced university degree

§  Minimum three years of experience working with adolescents

§  Demonstrated mastery in area of study and ability to teach within and across academic disciplines

§  Excellent communication skills

§  A desire to integrate curriculum with other subjects and to teach and work collaboratively

Compensation

The full-time equivalent salary range for this position is $75,000 – $138,200. The starting salary is based upon, but not limited to, several factors that include type and years of experience, education level, and expertise.
