The Carey School is a Preschool to Grade 5 independent school located in San Mateo,
California, operating on two campuses.The Carey School is committed to being an

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Lead Camp Counselors serve as the primary instructional and community leaders for
our summer program, Camp Carey. Each Lead Counselor is responsible for their own
dedicated group of campers, guiding them through their day and ensuring their
individual needs are met. Ideal candidates include classroom teachers, educators, or
recreational professionals who have experience leading groups of students. We are
looking for leaders who understand the nuances of classroom management and
possess the creative initiative to design, plan, and facilitate all of their own activities and
projects, aligned with weekly themes. Working alongside Assistant Camp Counselors,
they ensure a joyful and enriching camp experience where every child feels engaged,
valued, and confident.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
● Serving as the primary point of care and leadership for a dedicated group of
campers throughout the session.
● Independently designing and facilitating diverse, age-appropriate projects and
activities that bring weekly camp themes to life.
● Managing and documenting a weekly supply budget to ensure activities for their
group are high-quality and well-resourced.
● Directing daily group operations and instructional activities with the support of an
Assistant Camp Counselor

● Cultivating a positive, well-managed group community that promotes respect,
teamwork, and a sense of belonging.
● Mentoring and integrating Assistant Camp Counselors and CITs
(Counselors-In-Training) into daily activities, providing guidance and growth
opportunities.
● Collaborating with camp leadership, fellow staff, and parents/guardians to ensure
seamless daily operations and program alignment.
● Upholding rigorous safety protocols and camp policies to ensure the well-being of
all participants.
● Modeling professionalism and high-energy engagement for both campers and
staff.
● Utilizing positive behavior management and classroom management strategies
to resolve conflicts and promote inclusive interactions.
● Maintaining an organized, clean, and joyful environment for camp activities.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
● Strong leadership, communication, initiative, and mentorship skills.
● Ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment with patience and flexibility.

QUALIFICATIONS:
● Experience working with youth in a camp, school, or recreational setting required.
● Classroom teaching experience or experience leading structured youth programs
strongly preferred.
● Experience designing and implementing activities and/or curriculum preferred.

DETAILS:
Employment Dates:
● Staff Training: June 16-18, 2026
● Camp Season: June 22-August 7, 2026

Schedule:
● Monday-Friday; Shifts will fall between 7:45 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., approximately 8
hours per day.
● This is a seasonal, non-exempt position.

Compensation:
● $25-$30 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
