The Athenian School seeks a department chair for our Upper School science department to begin in the 2024-25 school year. The department chair will teach a total of three year-long science courses in addition to leading a department of eight faculty. We welcome interest from candidates with experience in biology, chemistry and/or physics. Successful candidates will have experience as pedagogical and curricular leaders for their discipline, experiential education, project based learning and demonstrate capacity for leading reviews of curriculum and classroom practices to ensure vertical continuity and appropriateness of content, skills, and assessment. The department chair will help to identify professional development opportunities for themselves and others within their department, seek out new ideas and initiatives, and supervise teachers in the department. They will develop and assume responsibility for the departmental budget, serve as a hiring manager, and onboard new faculty to their department. They will partner with the Dean of Faculty for evaluations and provide regular feedback to members of their department on areas of excellence and growth.

We seek candidates with a purposeful approach towards leading an academic department and demonstrating excellent classroom management skills. They will have experience seeking both informal and formal feedback and showcase effort to strengthen their leadership skills. Candidates should hold a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in science (chemistry, biology, or physics). The ability to teach other emerging and interdisciplinary subjects, and experience in curriculum design, would be a plus.

In addition to these responsibilities, faculty have the chance to apply for and serve as part of our residential life team which would include dormitory housing when these opportunities are open. Faculty also have the opportunity to coach a sport for a supplemental stipend.
