Position Summary
This K-2nd Grade Swim Assistant position supports the lead Swim teacher in daily swim lessons at the Oakland YMCA. The ideal candidate has experience working with kids in grades K through 2 or higher and basic water and pool safety knowledge. Swim experience is preferred. Candidates should be able to act immediately and appropriately to secure the safety of students while in the water. Candidates should also have good time management skills, be capable of following lead teacher’s instructions, and have an enthusiastic and positive attitude towards swimming and swim instruction

Job Responsibilities
-Constant tracking of students according to the attendance sheet
-Maintain constant supervision of students
-Walk (supervise) students to and from the YMCA
-Support students in the locker rooms (making sure students shower before and after entering the pool and change in a timely manner)
-Maintain student safety while inside the YMCA and the locker room
-Assist lead swimming teacher by leading both small group and individual instruction and assisting during large group instruction (you must be comfortable getting in the water for each class)
-Lead class activities if lead teacher is absent
-Support classroom and/or PE teachers if swimming is canceled

Job Requirements
-Complete Safe Schools
-Complete Safe Schools Crossing Guard Safety Training
-Have (or obtain) First Aid & CPR training

-Has a warm and energetic personality, a good sense of humor, and interest in working with teams
-Strong cultural competency and diversity, equity, and inclusion experience and commitment to ongoing practice and development
-Practices excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
-Strong organization, planning, and classroom management skills
-Flexible and able to handle transitions effectively
-Love and passion for working with young children
