Job Summary:

We seek teachers compelled by the Friends school mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, social justice, and quiet reflection. Physical Education at Friends is based on participation, student health and community engagement. We strive to build the capacity in students to think about working with peers, solving problems with confidence, and to understand their bodies. PE teachers instruct students in grades 4-8 and are responsible for designing and implementing curriculum that includes games, physical health and teamwork.  Teachers are engaged in regular collaboration, curriculum development and pedagogical reflection.

Candidates should know that San Francisco Friends School deeply values integration and collaboration. The school launched a new schedule in the 2019-2020 school year that features a block dedicated to transdisciplinary studies. Teachers will work in cross disciplinary teams to develop and implement curriculum aimed at examining relevant contemporary topics in their full complexity. Timely communication, patience, humility, willingness to listen and the ability to problem solve with peers are at the core of this work.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and implement curriculum aimed at examining relevant contemporary topics in their full complexity.
  • Lead and/or participate collaboratively committee programs
  • Coach sports teams
  • Evaluate and assess student performance
  • Supervise student advisory group
  • Create and deliver timely written and verbal communication
    patience, humility, willingness to listen and the ability to problem solve with peers are core communication expectations.  Includes Parent Communication
  • Lunch and Recess student supervision
  • Outdoor and *Cultural Education program participation (field trip supervision)
    * includes local, national and international travel

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferably in physical education, kinesiology, health or related fields)
  • Two or more years of experience teaching middle school physical education
  • Strong understanding of physical education
  • Experience as an instructional leader or curriculum designer
  • Knowledge of current pedagogy and facility with hands-on and project-based instruction
  • Flexible, adaptable, reflective and collaborative spirit
  • Must be eligible to work for any employer in the U.S.
  • Must have a Live Scan Fingerprinting test and clear a background check.

  • Spanish, Mandarin, Farsi or Hindi speaker

Physical requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit, talk, run, move equipment, hear and visually interact with students.
  • Reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
