Job Summary:

The San Francisco Friends School seeks an experienced middle school humanities teacher for the 2021-2022 school year. The ideal candidate will resonate with the Friends school mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, social justice, and quiet reflection. Our Quaker mission also compels us to create a diverse and inclusive community; we seek a person who will thrive and contribute to such a community, both within and beyond the walls of the school.   Teachers are engaged in regular collaboration, curriculum development and pedagogical reflection. Candidates should have a strong understanding of historical and literary background and be invested in collaborating with colleagues and working closely with students. Experience as an instructional leader or curriculum designer are also critical for the next instructor.

Candidates should know that San Francisco Friends School deeply values integration and collaboration. The school launched a new schedule in the 2019-2020 school year that features a block dedicated to transdisciplinary studies. Teachers will work in cross disciplinary teams to develop and implement curriculum aimed at examining relevant contemporary topics in their full complexity. Timely communication, patience, humility, willingness to listen and the ability to problem solve with peers are at the core of this work.

Job Responsibilities include:

close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, student assessment, supervising an advisory group, parent communications, and supervision of students at lunch and recess.
The school has programs in outdoor education as well as various curricular and cultural explorations; middle school teachers accompany their students on extended trips locally, nationally, and internationally.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree or higher in the humanities
Two or more years of experience teaching middle school humanities
Highly collaborative and creative team player
Knowledge of current pedagogy and facility with hands-on and project-based instruction
Preferred qualifications:

Advanced degree in literature, history, or humanities education
Openness to Quaker philosophy
Language skills in Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin or Hindi

Physical requirements:

Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time and have good mobility skills.
Must be able to stoop, kneel, and reach and extend arms in any direction.
Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: viewing a computer terminal and similar devices, extensive reading, etc.
Light lifting.
