Substitute Registered Nurse (RN) – Academic Year Contract

About the role

The Substitute School Nurse at San Domenico School provides essential medical oversight and support, fostering a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment for both our day and boarding students. This role emphasizes clinical excellence, professional integrity, and personal character, ensuring that Health Services reflect the school’s core values of study, reflection, community, and service.

The ideal candidate is an experienced Registered Nurse experienced in the dynamic landscape of adolescent health—from acute clinical assessment to mental health advocacy. Working on an on-call basis, you will provide vital supervision and medical advising that nurtures the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth of our students, ranging from Kindergarten through high school.

Job Responsibilities of Substitute Registered Nurse (RN):

Assess injured or ill students, take vital signs; notify parents, staff of student conditions as appropriate
Administer CPR/first aid to students as appropriate
Monitor and care for diabetic students
If needed, administer inhalers, nebulizers, epinephrine, baqsami, or Narcan.
Prepare and administer medications according to physician’s instructions; monitor and maintain medication logs.
Work closely with Resident Faculty as it relates to boarding student health and communication
Maintain and update student health records, logs, and reports
Document student clinic visits in Magnus Health.
Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly, sanitary, and safe condition
Close the clinic as needed to create a quarantine unit for boarding students and care for symptomatic patients
Maintaining inventory of health office and first aid supplies as needed
Assess students for outside medical and health appointments, follow up with providers, and follow treatment plans
Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures, including patient confidentiality and HIPAA
Keep current on licensure and medical certifications
Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor,  acting as a healthcare representative.

Qualifications

Registered Nurse (RN) license – (will need to provide documentation)
Minimum 2 years of healthcare experience working with children, adolescents, and the public (preferred)
Bachelor’s degree required
Knowledge of many areas of health, including mental health
Familiarity with student privacy laws (FERPA/HIPAA) as they relate to school health services.
Ability to work independently or with others
Ability to communicate well with others
Ability to assess situations and act quickly
BLS/CPR certification
Knowledge of state health regulations
Successful experience demonstrating tact, courtesy, positive attitude and maintaining cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers
Excellent computer proficiency (iPad, Mac computer, Gmail/Google Drive,. Knowledge of Magnus Health (preferred)
Demonstrates a professional demeanor and high-quality service while managing multiple priorities and time-sensitive tasks
Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
Experience with and demonstrated interest in teenagers/teen programs

Work Schedule:

The Substitute Registered Nurse provides essential coverage during scheduled staff vacations or unexpected absences. While there are no guaranteed minimum hours, this role offers a flexible schedule with typical shifts running Monday through Friday, 7:30 am–3:30 pm.

Compensation:

This position is nonexempt, which is eligible for paid overtime in accordance with applicable state and federal law. The position pays $58.20 – $67.90 an hour. Final placement within this range is commensurate with a candidate’s specific experience and qualifications; typically, those with fewer years of experience can expect placement toward the lower end of the scale.
