Job Description and Desired Qualifications

The K-8 Design, Build, Innovate Lab Specialist will design and execute a robust Design & Innovation curriculum for our K-8 students and partner closely with our other Design, Build, Innovate Lab Specialist to develop and curate a comprehensive, effective, and cohesive K-8 curriculum. Working collaboratively as a team, the Specialists will also co-design and implement two week-long summer institutes – one institute for non-Redwood Day students who attend Oakland/East Bay charter and public schools and one institute for independent, public, and charter school educators.

During the school year, the K-8 Design, Build, Innovate Lab Specialist will teach various grade levels with a focus on tinkering, building, design thinking principles, computational thinking, coding, and robotics. This person will work collaboratively with a partner Specialist to develop new courses and curriculum to consistently keep Redwood Day at the forefront of emerging ideas in innovation and design and in the education sector.

The ideal candidate will have experience teaching in a project-based K-8 environment and an understanding of developmental levels for each age. Additionally, the candidate should have experience with a variety of assessment strategies and implementing a balanced and integrated technology curriculum. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to meeting the learning needs of each student, a teaching style that supports differentiation of instruction, a collaborative spirit, and an interest in building a community.

Additional responsibilities include active involvement in student advisory, student activities, collaborative teacher meetings, supervisory duties, and supervising overnight outdoor education trips.

Schedule and Hours

This is a full time, exempt position and begins in August 2023.

 

Essential Requirements

● A minimum of 3-5 years teaching experience, preferably in S.T.E.A.M. related disciplines

●      B.A. in related field; Master’s degree preferred

● Experience designing and integrating S.T.E.A.M. oriented curriculum

● Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion

● Culturally competent, responsive, and sensitive to diverse populations

● Strong time management and organizational skills

● Strong classroom management skills

Desired Qualifications

● Strong knowledge of child development, especially ages 5-14

● Design Thinking background and/or equivalent professional development

● Experience with scripting and coding languages

● Experience teaching robotics

● Experience with 3D design and production

● Experience in a Makerspace or FabLab

 

Pay Scale:

The anticipated salary range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the full-time position of K-8 Design, Build, Innovate Lab Specialist is between $66,352 and $103,916, depending on factors such as experience and education. An additional stipend is provided in recognition of the summer institute work.
