Katherine Delmar Burke School is an independent K-8 gender-inclusive all-girls’ school located on a 3.5-acre campus in San Francisco. Position Description
As a mission-driven school, Burke’s is seeking a part-time English teacher for grade 7 or 8 who can educate, encourage, and empower girls by developing their skills in reading, writing, and literary analysis. Identity, identity formation, and exploring different perspectives and lived experiences are themes that run throughout the Upper School English curriculum. With an emphasis on project-based learning and a commitment to anti-racist education, students should be able to connect their learning to the world around them, communicate their ideas through speaking and writing, and be empowered to see themselves as agents of positive change. Expository and creative writing, vocabulary development, and grammar instruction are also part of the curriculum.

Job Responsibilities include:
• Teaching a portion of 7th or 8th grade English
o Formally assessing and reporting on student progress three times per year using checklist and narrative report cards
o Providing extra-help sessions during and after the school day, as needed
o Planning and supervising field trips relevant to curriculum
• Communication:
o Effective communication with colleagues in support of a collegial and
collaborative professional community
o Timely and supportive communication with students, parents, and caregivers to foster a strong partnership with families

• Collaboration:
o Participate in Upper School English team meetings in addition to attending weekly faculty meetings
o Contribute to curriculum development and revision
• Supervisory duties as applicable

Position Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent, preferably in a humanities-related field
• Experience teaching, preferably at middle-school level
• Demonstrated confidence in:
o differentiation of instruction
o cultural competency
o use of technology in instruction
o Understanding by Design approach to curriculum design (preferred)
• Commitment to:
o equitable and anti-racist teaching practices
o integrating service learning into classroom projects
o modeling lifelong learning and professional growth by engaging with
professional development opportunities
• Understanding of, and appreciation for:
o the social-emotional development of adolescent girls
o providing opportunities for learning through play by inviting creativity,
imagination, curiosity, and tinkering into the classroom
