Located in the Presidio of San Francisco, The Bay School is an independent, college preparatory high school committed to providing its students with a challenging, innovative curriculum and a collaborative, supportive community. Job Overview:

  • The Dean of Students is a senior school leader who has primary responsibility for attending to student support, growth and well-being;
  • The Dean of Students should be seen as an expert on adolescent development who provides guidance to students, parents, and staff/faculty, both formally and informally. Using that expertise and understanding of schools;
  • The Dean of Students works with the class deans to develop and articulate a vision for student life at Bay and work with the staffulty to execute that vision;
  • The Dean of Students works at both the 30,000-ft level as well as on the ground: whether overseeing the co-curriculum–including the advisory program, classes in social-emotional development, and student support–or working one-on-one with students;
  • The Dean of Students seeks to cultivate Bay’s uniquely mindful, caring, and inclusive community. Through the acculturation of new students, partnership with parents, management of the discipline process, and providing a consistent presence within the school, the Dean helps to uphold the school’s mission, precepts, and philosophy, especially the school’s commitment to student voice and to diversity, equity and inclusion.

  • Enjoys working with and inspiring high school learners in all areas of school life.
  • Has passion for and expertise in curricular and program design that creates meaningful student experiences and develop the whole child.
  • Thinks strategically and creatively connects authentically, and acts compassionately.
  • Possesses highly effective communication skills (written and spoken) and strong cultural competencies.
  • Seeks out collaboration, and values feedback and self-reflection as a means to improve both the institution and self.
  • Understands the value a mindfulness practice can have on personal development.
  • Dedicates self to anti-bias and equity work, and understands culturally responsive pedagogy and the social justice dimensions of education.
  • Understands the internal and external challenges faced by independent schools in being truly equitable and inclusive of all students/families and has worked to remedy that.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the key research in adolescent social-emotional development and uses it to inform all aspects their work, but especially with regard to honor codes, discipline, and restorative justice.
  • Brings significant experience in working with a range of students in a variety of classroom and educational environments and situations
  • Brings significant experience in working in partnership with parents and staff to achieve the best outcomes for each student.
  • Possesses significant experience in mentorship and leadership at both small group and institutional level.
  • Possesses a related (e.g. in psychology, teaching, and learning, or educational leadership) advanced or professional degree.
  • Wholeheartedly enjoys working with teens.
