JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary

Crystal seeks a regular, full-time exempt (1.0 FTE, 12-month) Director of Athletics starting July 2024. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management, and a minimum of 3 years of experience as an Athletics Director or 5 years as an Associate Director of Athletics . The ideal candidate will exhibit cultural competency and the ability to work well with diverse groups of people, demonstrate the ability to work independently with little or no supervision, possess the ability to multitask, and have strong time management skills.

The Director of Athletics provides leadership, supervision, and organization for all aspects of the Crystal Athletic experience. This role is responsible for the vision and supervision of the 6-12 Athletic program, execution of the Gryphons Rising initiative, and oversight of the Athletic department. The Director of Athletics regularly communicates with coaches, students, and families, and ensures a positive, memorable experience for all scholar-athletes.

Essential Functions

Facilitates, coordinates, and manages the Athletic program to ensure that it succeeds in keeping with the school’s mission
Oversees and develops the Athletics Program by:

Managing the year-long, 6-12 Athletic calendar
Creating, managing, and administering the structure, policy, and offerings of the Athletic program
Updating and distributing the Athletic handbook annually
Adhering to Crystal, California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), and Central Coast Section (CCS) policies and regulations
Ensuring that coaches, scholar-athletes, parents, and others in the school community adhere to the rules, regulations, and guidelines outlined by the WBAL and CIF
Managing the Upper School Athletics budget and overseeing the Associate Director of Athletics in managing the Middle School Athletics budget
Coordinating the Upper School Athletics program schedule of practices, games, transportation, and officials and supporting the Associate Director of Athletics in managing the Middle School Athletics program schedule
Recruiting potential athletic coaches and ensure required trainings  in partnership with Human Resources
Developing and providing athletes with opportunities needed to ensure their physical development and overseeing control of training room and training assignments
Managing the Assistant Director of Athletics and Operations Manager in oversight of athletic equipment and uniform needs
Setting up pre-season family meetings on both campuses with the Athletic department and coaches
Communicating with the Gryphon Club (the booster club) to fund aspects of the Athletics program
Planning the annual Athletics recognition event in conjunction with the Gryphon Club
Leading the Gryphons Rising initiative- a comprehensive plan to elevate Crystal Athletics within the next 5 years
Represents Crystal at league meetings and manages all aspects of the interscholastic Athletic program for students
Represents the Athletics program at Admission events and collaborates with the Admission team to ensure a strong Athletics-Admission partnership
Promotes equity and inclusion among scholar-athletes and coaches and works in collaboration with the Associate Head for Institutional Programs and Initiatives (AHIPI) and the Divisional Heads in furthering the development of social and cultural competencies of the coaching community
Creates and delivers clear communications, written and verbal, to all constituents regarding the Athletics program
Coordinates all communication between the school and CIF, keeping the AHIPI informed of all pertinent information
Communicates holiday schedules to all coaches and appropriate constituencies
Ensures games and scores are communicated to the San Mateo Daily Journal
Is responsible for game management: help set up for games and hold coaches accountable for facility cleanliness
Oversees and develops policies and procedures, risk management plan, and emergency action plans
Manages, supervises, provides feedback to, and evaluates the Associate Director of Athletics, the Assistant Director of Athletics and Operations Manager, and athletic coaches
Provides bi-monthly reports for the Board of Trustees
Maintains confidentiality at all times, upholds Crystal’s core values, and fosters an inclusive school environment

Required education and experience

Bachelor’s degree in Sports Management or other related fields
A minimum of 3 years experience as a Director of Athletics or 5 years as an Associate Director of Athletics
Valid CPR/AED/First Aid (American Red Cross or American Heart Association)
Valid California driver’s license and clean driving history
Familiarity with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) regulations
 

Preferred  education and experience

Master’s degree in Sports Management or other related fields
5+ years experience as a Director of Athletics
Operational knowledge of Google applications (including Google Doc, Sheets, Slides) and Gmail
Operational knowledge of applications that support athletics management programs, such as Teamsnap, Arbiter, Max Preps

 

Travel Required

Light travel between the Middle School and Upper School campuses, as needed

 

Physical demands and work environment

Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Able to climb stairs
Load and unload materials
Bend and twist at the waist, stoop, crouch, squat, kneel, and work with knees bent
Stretch and lift above the head

Salary and Benefits

This is a full-time regular exempt (40 hours/week), 12-month Administrative position, and eligible for 12-month employee benefits. The annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $143,082-$173,480.
