The Bay School of SF

Located in the Presidio of San Francisco, The Bay School is an independent, college preparatory high school committed to providing its students with a challenging, innovative curriculum and a collaborative, supportive community. MANDARIN

We are seeking a person to teach Mandarin on a 30-50% basis at The Bay School, beginning August, 2018.

This teacher will teach 3-4 Mandarin courses over the course of the school year (one to two per semester) and is expected to fulfill all of the aspects of class preparation, teaching and grading.

Each semester class meets for eighty minutes three times a week in a rotating schedule. In addition to class preparation and classroom teaching, the teacher is responsible for:

  • curricular development and alignment
  • design of skills-based formative and summative assessments
  • timely grading
  • regular communication with the student, her/his/their parents, and the student’s advisor regarding the student’s progress
  • one-on-one student tutorial as needed
  • weekly faculty and course team meetings
  • substitute and/or cover additional study halls (“Flex” blocks) during the week.

The ideal candidate

  • finds resonance with The Bay School mission, philosophy and precepts;
  • possesses a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in the language or a related field;
  • has worked with high school students in some capacity (e.g as teacher, tutor, teaching assistant)
  • brings a diversity of teaching and life experience;
  • has demonstrated experience in working collaboratively and sees collaboration as a means to improvement and growth;
  • is dedicated to anti-bias and equity work and understands both culturally responsive pedagogy and the social justice dimensions of education;
  • is committed to ongoing feedback and professional growth;
  • demonstrates a passion for subject matter as well as for teaching and learning;
  • enjoys working with and inspiring high school learners in all areas of school life.
