Middle School Social Studies Teacher
Reports to: Director of Upper School
Hours: Full time
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Responsible for instructing students in 5th/6th Grade multi-age groupings, on a two-year rotating Social Studies curriculum focused on western civilization and U.S. History. Using project-based learning and simulations, our classrooms aim to make history and culture come alive for our students. In the spring, the Social Studies and Language Arts faculty work in tandem on an interdisciplinary capstone project.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum, Materials, and Classroom Management
- Instruct students about global and national social issues
- Help students understand the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors that influence the development of world regions
- Teach about political and economic systems
- Establishes an inspiring classroom setting that is organized and engaging, with systems and procedures that manage student behavior, movement, and learning
- Plan, develop, and utilize a variety of instructional materials and aids appropriate to the intellectual and instructional level of pupils from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds who possess a range of mental and emotional maturity
- Develops relevant sequential assignments and lesson plans that guide and challenge students
- Establishes a powerful classroom culture where children have high expectations for themselves and for others, are self-motivated and self-directed, have pride in themselves and in their community, care about themselves and their community, and where children value and love learning
- Utilizes student learning profiles to implement small and whole group lesson plans and classroom activities consistent with Marin Horizon instructional guidelines
- Collaborate with Marin Horizon team members to improve own and others’ instructional practices; shares best practices
Parent Education, Meetings, and Conferences
- Provides students and their families with regular and timely information on classroom activities and student progress with respect and assuming best intentions; finds ways to involve parents/guardians in their students’ education
- Assist in the development of and participates in school functions, including but not limited to open houses, orientation meetings, parent education, and school-wide activities
- Prepare documents and reports necessary to facilitate parent-teacher conferences or other meetings requested by parents or school administration
Record-Keeping and Data Assessment
- Assesses students regularly in accordance with Marin Horizon guidelines, examines student assessment data, and refines learning plans to differentiate instruction for each student
- Maintain grade books and meet reporting deadlines
- Participate in all assessment-related trainings
- Prepare student progress reports and assessment reports as required by administration
- Coordinate with before- and after-school staff to ensure appropriate, personalized, and consistent out-of-school time services.

- Write monthly Social Studies class notes
- Participate in after school/evening activities: i.e., Parent conferences, weekend tours, overnight trips
- Supervise arrivals/departures as well as recess and other shared duties when assigned
- Uphold attendance procedures
- Enthusiastically participate in school-wide culture events
- Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in related field required; Master’s Degree highly preferred
- Valid California Teaching Credential or ability to attain one based on out of state certification
- 3-5 years related experience and training
- Sensitive to the needs of children from diverse backgrounds
- Must possess a growth mindset and can use feedback to refine practice
