Position Overview:
The Learning Specialist provides individualized academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support to students while collaborating closely with teachers, families, and external professionals to ensure all learners are supported and successful. Assist with the supervision of Slingerland teachers.
Key Responsibilities:
Student & Teacher Support
* Provide direct, short-term intervention and academic support to students as appropriate.
* Administer and interpret assessments and inform targeted interventions.
* Collaborate with teachers to design and implement classroom strategies that support access to curriculum for struggling students and proactive approaches to student behaviors.
* Review psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations; translate findings into actionable strategies for teachers and families.
* Collaborate with Admissions and Administrative teams during student evaluations, classroom observations, and placement decisions.
* Participate actively in student support team meetings to monitor progress and refine intervention strategies.
* Participate in family conferences to discuss student progress, goals, and home-based strategies as needed.
* Maintain individual student progress files, including work samples and assessment data for review and analysis. Ensure accurate, timely documentation of instructional plans, student progress, and assessment results.
* Meet bi-weekly with teaching teams to discuss high priority students.
* Work in conjunction with Lower School and Middle School Heads to discuss student supports
School Partnership
* Lead a relevant Professional Development for faculty and staff
* Conduct one parent educational presentation
* Family Partnership
* Serve as the primary liaison for families regarding learning support services and external resources, such as therapists, evaluators, and service providers.
* Educate and empower parents and guardians on learning differences and effective support strategies.
* Support families in navigating IEP or 504 processes and meetings, as appropriate.
*Collaborate with homeroom teachers and families to lead transitions.
Qualifications
* Degree in Special Education, Educational Therapy, or a related field (Master’s degree strongly preferred).
* Valid state certification or licensure in Special Education (or eligibility for certification).
* Trained in the Slingerland Approach
* Minimum of 3–5 years of experience working with students with diverse learning needs in a school setting.
* Strong understanding of learning differences, executive functioning, and evidence-based instructional strategies.
* Experience interpreting and applying findings from psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations.
* Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, families, and outside professionals.
* Excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
* Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment.
* Additional training in Structured Literacy, such as Orton-Gillingham, Structured Word Inquiry, Writing Revolution
* Training in Math Intervention or multi-sensory math curricula
Compensation:
Salary commensurate with experience. Health, dental, vision, 403b benefits offered.
