Upper School Music Teacher and Director of Performing Arts
San Francisco Day School is seeking a Music Teacher and Director of Performing Arts for the 2013-14 school year.
San Francisco Day School is a K-8, nonprofit private school in the heart of the city with an enrollment of approximately 400 students. As listed in the NAIS Principles of Good Practice, an effective SFDS teacher has thorough knowledge, uses a variety of teaching techniques, establishes positive relationships with students, collaborates with colleagues, initiates professional development, supports the School mission, serves outside the classroom, adheres to professional standards, and models integrity and respect.
The ideal candidate is an outstanding musician who has a vibrant and engaging teaching style that inspires students. He or she will have a successful working knowledge of various pedagogical philosophies (including, but not limited to Orff-Schulwerk, Dalcroze or Kodaly) and understand the vocal pedagogy and development appropriateness to acquire musical skills in children and adolescents. Because of the team nature of this position, candidates must be able to direct a select choral ensemble (grades 5-8), accompany on piano intermediate-level choral pieces, and possess interpersonal skills conducive to teamwork and curriculum building.
The successful candidate must possess a bachelor’s degree, with a degree in music education strongly preferred. He or she must have a minimum of five years successful experience as a music teacher in a school setting, and sufficient piano skills for accompanying and directing vocal classes and groups. The ability to incorporate dance and other movement activities as well as knowledge of and ability to utilize a variety of musical instruments, (including but not limited to: pitched and non-pitched percussion, guitars recorders, etc.) is also essential. The successful candidate must have interpersonal skills conducive to a team approach to the school and musical community including: a love of children, patience, tact, a friendly disposition, enthusiasm, passion for music education and developed communication skills.
