Upper School History, Social Science & Civics Teacher

About The Nueva School: The Nueva School, located in the San Francisco Bay Area and founded in 1967, is a nationally recognized independent school serving gifted and talented students. The school is a three-time winner of the US Department of Education National Blue Ribbon Award, and winner of the American Institute of Architects Award for School Design and Sustainability, as well as the Presidential Award for Teaching.
Nueva is a student-centered progressive school emphasizing integrated studies, STEM, creative arts, and social-emotional learning. The school offers a constructivist program with project-based learning and special-area teachers in visual art, reading, math, science, music, physical education, technology, and social-emotional learning. Our school community inspires passion for lifelong learning, fosters social and emotional acuity, and develops the imaginative mind.  We believe in great teachers and in helping people learn and grow. Teachers and staff are supported both financially and through formative evaluation to continue their professional development.
Nueva’s middle and lower school campuses are located in Hillsborough, CA, just off highway 280. The thirty-three acre Hillsborough campus includes a design lab, media lab, library, Cafe, organic garden, and extensive wooded areas. Nueva employees commute from San Francisco, communities throughout the peninsula, and the East and North Bay.  Our new high school campus will open in August, 2014, in a brand new building, a state-of-the-art educational facility in downtown San Mateo that was custom designed for our 21st century high school program needs.
Applicants for teaching positions need to have a minimum of three years lead teaching experience and be conversant with current pedagogical and developmental research.
Founding of Nueva’s High School Division: After many years of discussion, several years of comprehensive study, demographic analysis, feedback from alumni, consultation with educational and industry thought-leaders, and visits to more than 50 model high schools across the country and around the world, Nueva expanded its nationally recognized program to encompass a high school. A seminal point of validation came from Nueva’s 2011 Presidents’ Roundtable, during which university presidents and college deans from some of the country's most respected institutions convened at our Hillsborough campus to discuss the future of education and affirmed the need for a new high school model like ours to better prepare students for this new century.  The opportunity of a lifetime, to reimagine high school, is now a reality: Nueva’s high school opened in August of 2013 at our temporary facility at The College of San Mateo, with its first class of seventy-seven grade nine students and an extraordinary first year founding faculty.  Our new high school campus in downtown San Mateo (a state-of-the-art, custom designed educational facility) will open in August 2014.
We prepare Nueva graduates to be leaders in their chosen fields, certain of what drives them, and ready to pioneer new paths to success. We have designed a high school that responds to the pressing social, emotional, and learning needs of today’s teens, preparing them to direct their college educations and to live well as responsible human beings and global citizens. Nueva students learn to address difficult challenges with optimism and resiliency. Our community is a personal and curricular partnership, where students encourage each other as they — alongside their teachers as partners, coaches, and mentors — continually think, construct, create, and re-think the best ideas and opportunities to explore their own passions and connect deeply with themselves and others.
True to Nueva’s founding principles, the high school is a dynamic laboratory school with opportunities for deep and rigorous learning that include but are not limited to the mastery of traditional disciplines. Nueva offers an accelerated and interdisciplinary studies program that provides extended experiences where students design, discover, reflect, and apply their ideas in practical and real-world contexts. The physical proximity and institutional connections to world-renowned universities, cultural organizations, high-tech companies, healthcare institutions, and the can-do spirit of Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area offer a dynamic entrepreneurial community for collaborative partnerships within this setting.
