The San Francisco Friends School, a Quaker school located in the refurbished Levi Strauss building in the heart of the Mission District of San Francisco, seeks an experienced upper elementary third or fourth grade teacher to begin the 2014-15 school year with our team. SFFS opened its doors in the fall of 2002; in September of 2013, at full enrollment, the school will include over 430 children in grades K–8.
The school seeks a teacher who resonates with the Friends School mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, social justice, respect for the individual, and quiet reflection. Our Quaker ideals compel us to create a diverse and inclusive community; we seek a person who will thrive and contribute to such a community, both within and beyond the walls of the school.
We have two sections of each grade in the lower school, K-4. In third and fourth grades, both lead teachers in each section share one full time assistant teacher, and work in close collaboration with the grade level teams. Lower school students have specialists classes in Music, Art, Drama, PE, Spanish, and Library. We welcome teachers who are eager to collaborate with one another on projects, and weave the disciplines together when most effective. Responsibilities include close teamwork for curriculum development, committee involvement, attendance at some evening special events, student portfolios, assessments and reporting, and clear parent communications. The school has growing programs in service learning and technology, mindfully choosing projects that meet our goals for student learning. Our third graders go on one outdoor education focused camping overnight in the spring, and our fourth graders go on two trips related to their social studies and outdoor ed goals; a two night overnight trip in the fall, and a spring one night trip to Fort Ross.
The school supports a generous professional development program, encouraging teachers to attend workshops and seminars, visit schools, and learn about contemporary research relevant to the classroom and program.
