San Francisco Friends School, a Quaker school located in the Mission District of San Francisco, seeks an experienced middle school Spanish teacher for the 2014-15 school year. The school seeks teachers who resonate with the Friends school mission, which provides an exemplary education in a community dedicated to peaceful problem-solving, service to others, simplicity, social justice, respect for the individual, and quiet reflection. Our Quaker mission also compels us to create a diverse and inclusive community; we seek a person who will thrive and contribute to such a community, both within and beyond the walls of the school.
Spanish language and Latino culture are important elements of our academic program for all students, grades K-8. We offer Spanish language classes emphasizing communication and literacy for both heritage speakers and second language learners; we make frequent cultural and service-oriented field trips in our Mission District neighborhood; every student travels to Nicaragua as a 7th grader and to the Central Valley of California as an 8th grader. The middle school Spanish teacher will join a Spanish department of three and will be a key member of the middle school team. S/he will also serve as an advisor for 10-12 middle school students.
• Three or more years experience teaching middle school Spanish
• Knowledge of current pedagogy for second language acquisition
• Native speaker
• Openness to and curiosity about Quaker philosophy
• Collaborative and creative team player
The school supports a generous professional development program, encouraging teachers to attend
workshops and seminars, visit schools, and learn about contemporary research relevant to the classroom and program.
