Middle School Science Teacher

Bentley School, an independent K-12 school in Oakland and Lafayette, California, seeks a full-time Science teacher, able and eager to teach 6th Grade Earth and Environmental Science, and one other Middle School STEM or 7th/8th grade core Science class. The balance of teaching will be either be a STEM elective (e.g., Robotics), one section of Life Science (7th grade) or one section of Physical Science (8th grade). The faculty at Bentley is an innovative, collaborative group who seeks a candidate to complement their strengths and to add his or her own expertise and background to provide additional breadth to the core curriculum.
Job Summary:
The position will include, but is not limited to:
●     Planning and teaching 3 sections of 6th grade Earth and Environmental Science and one other Middle School Class (i.e., STEM elective or 7th/8th grade core Science class) that incorporate inquiry and project-based learning, with a goal of developing skills, content knowledge, and an active interest in Science
●     Leading an advisory group
●     Collaborating with Director of K-8 STEM Education on Middle School STEM initiatives, including enhancing core science
●     Participating in all aspects of faculty and student life at Bentley
●     Contributing to curriculum development and pedagogy
●     Attending faculty meetings
●     Participating in the admissions process
●     Attending School events
●     Participating in at least one grade level trip
●     Collaborating with the cross-divisional science faculty and non-Science faculty on intradisciplinary and interdisciplinary lessons, respectively

Candidates should possess the ability and willingness to work with students in large and small group settings using multiple teaching methods and assessments to reach a broad range of learners.  The ideal candidate should also be committed to issues of diversity, leadership, inclusion, and equity.  Candidates who reflect the broad range of diversity of the Bay Area are encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications:
●     Bachelor’s degree in Science, with a Masters preferred
●     Demonstrated successful teaching experience in middle school
Preferred Qualifications:
●     Advanced degree in Science
●     Professional experience in STEM-related field
●     A passion for working with young people
●     A desire to collaborate with and contribute to a dynamic community of teachers
●     Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
●     Experience in course design, planning, and implementation
●     Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)
