The Berkeley School is seeking a humanities teacher to join a cohesive, collaborative faculty team in our learner-centered middle school. With the support of the Middle School Division Head and the team, the humanities teacher will be responsible for humanities curriculum design, review, and implementation. She or he will lead an advisory group of 10-12 students and will work closely with the middle school teaching team to plan and carry out interdisciplinary projects, national and international travel, outdoor education, community outreach and connection, and service learning.
A deep, developmental understanding of teaching reading, writing, speaking, and thinking at the middle school level
The ability to scale content appropriately for middle school learners and to balance content with skill-building
The ability to create and sustain an inclusive classroom and to differentiate instruction
A desire to work collaboratively
A genuine appreciation for 11-14 year-old people — their gifts AND their challenges
A passion for humanities and teaching
Three years teaching experience in humanities, English, or cultural studies/history at the middle or high school level
Experience with the Teaching for Understanding framework
Experience with the “Facing History and Ourselves” curricular framework
Experience teaching in a progressive and collaborative environment
Experience in outdoor education or service learning, especially with this age group Interest in or experience with project-based learning
The ability to use technology effectively and appropriately in the classroom
Strong organizational skills
Flexibility and a sense of humor.
