Position Description:

We are seeking a full-time Humanities (integrated history and English) Head Teacher for 6th grade. The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years of teaching experience and a passion for working with middle school boys. The candidate will have a deep knowledge of the instruction of history, writing, grammar, spelling, and reading comprehension skills and strategies. Ideally, the candidate is well-versed with the reading and writing workshop model. The position involves collaborating closely with other 6th-grade teachers, the humanities department teachers in other grades, and the Head of Upper School. Candidates should be strong in their use of technology tools for teaching. Collaboration with the librarians and educational technologists is also expected.  In addition, this position involves mentoring and partnering with a full-time Resident Teacher each year who is part of the New Teacher Institute. The Humanities 6 Head Teacher will work closely with the Director of Teacher Development and Strategic Initiatives in supporting the Resident Teacher’s professional development.

As an advisor, the successful applicant will lead morning advisory, support students during study hall, supervise during snack/recess, and facilitate student-led parent conferences in the fall and spring.  Strong communication skills are essential as faculty are expected to communicate regularly with other team members and parents about student progress. Homework and other information to students is posted online using Google Classroom. School-wide responsibilities include recess and lunch supervision, and grade level and faculty meetings. Other responsibilities may include committee work, chaperoning outdoor education/field trips, and attending student performances and athletic events.

Bachelor’s Degree is required, teaching credential and/or Master’s Degree is preferred and must be in the discipline of English, History or a related field.
Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills
Prior experience teaching humanities to Upper School (Grades 5-8) students is preferred
Well-developed interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including communicating effectively with all constituents in a school environment, including students, co-workers, parents, alumni, volunteers, and the public.
Adaptability, honesty, self-reliance, teamwork, dependability, flexibility, willingness to listen and learn, work ethic, determination, persistence, problem-solving skills, and congeniality are essential.
Must complete background screening and verification
The ideal candidate will have a deep knowledge of the instruction of history, the writing process, the English language, and literature, as well as pedagogy. They should demonstrate a passion for working with middle school students and a commitment to developing innovative approaches to learning. Experience with project-based learning and inquiry-based instruction are ideal, and the use of formative assessment for high-quality feedback is required. Candidates should excel in utilizing technology tools for teaching and thrive in a collaborative environment. Engagement in cultural competency development, including integrating diversity and global awareness, is expected. The ideal candidate will possess the skills and imagination to connect history, writing, and literature to students’ lives while also valuing guiding students through the emotional journey of their middle school years.

Salary information:

At Town, salaries are one component of a compensation package that includes retirement matching, daily lunch, health & dental insurance, and life, AD & LTD insurance. The anticipated annual base salary range the school reasonably expects to pay candidates for the Humanities 6 Head Teacher position is $75,000 to $130,000, depending on factors such as years of experience. In addition to those factors, we believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity with our current employees as part of any final offer.
