Overview of Position
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Middle School Learning Specialist is responsible for the learning services program for sixth through eighth grade students at The San Francisco School. The Learning Specialist meets with teachers to discuss individual children; screens children for learning and developmental problems; recommends teaching strategies to meet individual needs; provides service directly to students individually, in small groups, and within the classrooms; and works with teachers and parents to recommend outside testing, tutoring or other indicated special services. The Learning Specialist educates faculty, parents and students about learning and teaching styles and strategies. The Learning Specialist also works to coordinate the after-school tutoring program with the school day program. There are three Learning Specialists at The San Francisco School who collaborate to oversee and coordinate the overall learning services program. This position focuses on the needs of sixth through eighth graders, but some of the work may be with younger students as needed.
The successful candidate will have training and experience as a Learning Specialist, with an Educational Therapist certificate, Special Education Credential and/or a MA in Special Education highly desired. The candidate will also have teaching experience in a multicultural classroom and sensitivity to the needs of children from diverse backgrounds; middle school experience; an ability to work comfortably with teachers and parents; and a familiarity with educational resources in San Francisco.
