PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Athenian School seeks a part-time Speech & Debate Instructor/Coach to lead a vibrant and growing speech and debate program. This candidate will provide instruction and support for all levels of high school students as they prepare for, plan, and participate in a range of tournaments and events. This course is taught as an elective offering for Upper School students and includes coordination of and oversight of weekend tournament participation.
In the fall semester, students will learn and practice various debate styles (i.e. Parliamentary, Lincoln Douglas, Public Forum). They will also explore different event formats (i.e. extemporaneous speaking, dramatic interpretation, etc.). These experiences will prepare students for spring competitions and tournaments through ongoing practice, up through local National Qualifying Tournament in March.
In addition to these responsibilities, faculty have the chance to apply for and serve as part of our residential life team which would include dormitory housing. Faculty also have the opportunity to coach a sport for a supplemental stipend.
CORE QUALIFICATIONS
We seek candidates that have experience teaching and/or coaching high school (grades 9-12) Speech and Debate in National Speech and Debate Association activities in accordance with NSDA guidelines. A high school diploma is required for this role. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills as well as technological fluency. Candidates must also have a passion for working with adolescents and a commitment to democracy, justice, equity, inclusion, service, and environmental stewardship.
