Redwood Day School

Redwood Day is a vibrant K-8 school with over 400 students and 85+ faculty and staff all learning together on our four-acre campus in the heart of Oakland. Everything we do is designed to keep every child engaged and growing. Academically, that means a world-class curriculum, the best teachers, and a focus on the individual student. Socially and emotionally, we teach students to work through challenges, respect each other’s differences, and honor their diverse community. We find great strength in multiple perspectives and embrace every opportunity to weave diversity in thought and action into our social, emotional, and academic lives.

Job Description and Desired Qualifications

Redwood Day is modifying its operations in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the guidelines set forth by the Alameda County Public Health Department, the Alameda County Office of Education, and the California Public Health Department. To properly implement appropriate social distancing measures, Redwood Day is seeking to fill several temporary positions. These positions will remain in place until the pandemic subsides significantly enough to reduce or eliminate the operational requirements necessary to adhere to the recommendations as outlined by the agencies listed above.

The Temporary 6th Grade Physical Education teacher will provide wellness and physical education tailored to a wide range of abilities. The ideal candidate will be familiar with national standards around physical literacy and engage students in their own discovery and empowerment around physical fitness and positive body image. This teacher will partner closely with the 7-8 Physical Education Teacher/Athletic Director to develop and align the curriculum vertically.

The teaching load consists of three sections of 6th-grade physical education classes, in addition to covering lunch-time duties, supervising 6th grade stable groups, and supporting other areas of the program as needed. Our program is on a 4-day cycle, and P.E. classes meet 2 times/cycle. This means that the Temporary 6th Grade Physical Education teacher will teach P.E. 2-3 days a week depending on the cycle. On days that 6th Grade P.E. is not scheduled, this individual will support other 6th grade classes during social distancing. This includes supervising 1-3 stable groups of up to 14 students, socially distanced, in a classroom setting alone or sometimes with a Middle School Core/Specialist Teacher. Supervision of stable groups includes supporting classroom instruction either in-person or live-streamed from another location on campus. If/when students are engaged in Distance Learning following School breaks or as required by a Shelter in Place Order, the Temporary 6th Grade Physical Education Teacher will modify P.E. instruction for Distance Learning. Hours may be reduced if Redwood Day’s Distance Learning Program is implemented or suspended with 30 calendar days’ notice.

This is a full-time, temporary position beginning December 7, 2020.
