St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls approximately 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten – Grade 8. Position Summary

This Assistant Librarian will support the K-8 Head Librarian with the daily functions of the Lower and Middle School Libraries that support St. Paul’s students, staff, and parents. The ideal candidate will be committed to continuing to develop their craft with a growth mindset, be adept at communicating effectively with both children and adults, and will foster a developmentally appropriate cooperative learning environment for their students. Additional responsibilities may include support with coverage for recesses, arrival/dismissal, and/or lunch duty (or equivalent).

Job Responsibilities:

-Maintain a clean, welcoming, and inclusive library environment
-Assist with processing new materials (cataloging, covering, and displaying)
-Manage incoming returns and shelve materials appropriately
-Support students and families with book returns and reminders
-Assist with library classes and student engagement
-Help students locate and check out books
-Provide support to students, faculty, staff, and families in navigating the library collection
-Create engaging displays, signage, and communications for the school community
-Curate book lists and assist with pulling materials for classroom and student us
-Monitor library supplies and coordinate reordering
-Support collection development, including:
-Researching titles aligned with curriculum, student identity, and community needs
-Weeding outdated, damaged, or underused materials

Teaching & Literacy Support:

-Develop and deliver lessons that foster a love of reading, media literacy, and research skills, aligned with AASL and California state standards
-Apply early literacy practices (including phonics and Science of Reading) in K–2 classes
-Teach digital literacy, including strategies for identifying misinformation, lateral reading, and AI/media fact-checking for 3-8 students

Qualifications

-High School Diploma or GED required
-Interest in and passion for working with young people
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
-Collaborative and generative
-Able to work both independently and in a team setting

This is a part-time position (15-20 hours per week) with an hourly rate between $20- $30, depending on education and experience.
