Lower School Elementary Teacher

St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, St. Paul’s Episcopal School serves approximately 370 students in Kindergarten through Grade 8. Position Summary: St. Paul’s Episcopal School seeks an experienced and dynamic Lower Elementary Teacher to join our Lower School faculty. The ideal candidate is a reflective educator who is passionate about working with young children and committed to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices.

This teacher will collaborate closely with their grade-level teaching partner and the broader Lower School team to design and implement an engaging, developmentally appropriate curriculum. The role requires a teacher who brings curiosity, flexibility, and a growth mindset to their practice, and who fosters a joyful, collaborative, and student-centered classroom environment.

Our Lower School program currently includes Bridges Math, Units of Study in Reading and Writing (Teachers College), and Responsive Classroom practices.

Additional responsibilities will include coverage for recesses, lunch duties, arrival/dismissal, and active engagement in our community-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) work.

The students are supported by specialists in physical education, music, art, Spanish, and library.

Job Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities
-Serve as a lead lower elementary classroom teacher across core academic subjects
-Plan and teach integrated, developmentally appropriate curriculum in:
-Language Arts (reading and writing)
-Mathematics
-Science
-Social Studies
-Collaborate closely with grade-level colleagues and specialist teachers (Art, Music, Physical Education, Library, Spanish)
-Partner with Learning Specialists (K–8) to support diverse learners
-Foster a classroom environment that supports social-emotional growth, student agency, and a love of learning
-Engage in ongoing curriculum development, planning, and assessment practices
-Mentor and support a resident teacher
-Communicate effectively and regularly with students, families, and colleagues
-Participate in faculty meetings, grade-level meetings, and school-wide initiatives
-Contribute actively to the school’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) work
-Fulfill additional school responsibilities such as recess supervision, arrival/dismissal duties, and committee participation

Required:

-Bachelor’s degree
-3–5 years of lower elementary teaching experience
-Experience teaching multiple subject areas in a self-contained classroom
-Strong classroom management, organization, and planning skills
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
-Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues
-Warm, energetic presence and a strong commitment to working with young children

Preferred:

-Master’s degree or teaching credential
-Experience in an independent or private school setting
Familiarity with:
-Units of Study in Reading and Writing (Teachers College)
-Bridges Math
-Responsive Classroom

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) position. The salary range is $68,000–$100,000, depending on experience and education. Start Date: August 12, 2026.
