Learning Specialist (Upper School, grades 5-8)

Qualifications:
Masters and/or Graduate certification as a Learning Specialist, Resource, or Educational Therapist preferred
Minimum of 3-5 years teaching in a school setting (preferably upper elementary-8th grade)
Experience working with adolescents with learning differences; knowledge of specific intervention/remediation/accelerated programs
Strong background in mathematics and STEM-related curriculum
Experience collaborating with teachers, administrators, and families
Experience using assistive technology
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Experience developing/ collecting and maintaining an organized system of student-related data
Responsibilities:
Partner closely with colleagues (classroom teachers, US learning specialist counterpart, US instructional coach, US counselor, and K-4 learning specialist team)
Monitor the progress of students with identified learning differences, including advanced learners, assist in developing personalized learning plans, and oversee implementation of learning strategies so that all students can access the curriculum
Partner closely with parents of students with learning differences to keep them informed of supports in place and students progress
Assist teachers, families, and students in broadening their understanding of the learning process and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) at SF Day
Facilitate regular lunchtime/after-school study centers, team teach with faculty, teach study skills in daily afternoon learning lab to include flexible groups, whole-class, and small group instruction
Consult with teachers, attend student support meetings and conduct student observations
Participate in all aspects of faculty life, including advisory, electives, and student/community meetings. Additional responsibilities include active involvement in collaborative teacher meetings, supervisory duties, service learning, and outdoor education.
Learning Specialist Job Description (Upper School, 5-8):
The Upper School Learning Specialist will be an active, integrated part of the K-8 learning specialist and upper school academic teams. They will partner with their Upper School learning specialist counterpart, the Upper School instructional coach, the Upper School counselor, the K-4 Learning Specialist team, and report directly to the Head of the Upper School. In addition to working closely with other teachers, they will monitor the progress of students with identified learning differences, assist in developing personalized learning plans, and oversee implementation of learning strategies in Upper School classrooms so that all students can access the curriculum. Learning Specialists at SF Day School assist teachers, parents, and students in broadening their understanding of the learning process and our implementation of Universal Design for Learning.
Direct services will include facilitating regular lunchtime/after school study centers, team teaching with faculty, and teaching study skills/learning strategies in the Upper School as part of Learning Labs to include flexible-groupings, whole-class, and small-group instruction. The Upper School Learning Specialist will consult with teachers through collaborative meetings in conjunction with the instructional coach, attend student support meetings and conduct observations of individual students who are identified as requiring additional supports. Also, this individual will attend parent meetings with the Head of the Upper School and/or Upper School instructional coach as part of the student-family partnership around learning support for students.
As a teacher in the Upper School, this individual may also serve as an advisor, facilitate an elective activity, and participate in various student and community activities. Additional responsibilities include active involvement in collaborative teacher meetings, supervisory duties, service learning, and outdoor education.
The ideal candidate will have an enthusiasm for working with variable learners and enjoys collaborating with colleagues and has a strong background in both language arts and mathematics.
