Purpose Statement
San Domenico Middle School teachers are committed to educating, engaging, and empowering middle school students, both inside and outside of the classroom, providing them with a solid foundation for high school and beyond. Faculty must demonstrate thorough knowledge of their subject matter and effectiveness in teaching. The middle school is grounded in student-centered classrooms, which stimulate student learning daily through a variety of innovative instructional methodologies.
Job Summary
The ideal candidate will be an experienced and accomplished middle school teacher who will teach 6th Grade Humanities, serve as an advisor, and participate in middle school activities that support the program. Classroom management and digital citizenship require close attention and instruction, and therefore experience teaching middle school is essential.
Position Description:
Applicants for this Humanities position will be able to teach both English and History courses. A background and interest in ancient history as well as middle grade literature is required.
Qualified candidates should have at least three (3) years teaching experience, interest and experience in multi-disciplinary education, and the ability to connect with young people. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, flexible, and eager to bring innovative ideas to their curriculum. The candidate must demonstrate a natural ability and passion for collaborating with other teachers in planning and execution of courses.
Job responsibilities of an Middle School Humanities Teacher and Advisor include, but are not limited to:
Key Responsibilities:
To co-teach one or more sections of Middle School English Language Arts and/or History
To co-develop and implement engaging lesson plans that support a rigorous and differentiated curriculum
To foster a positive, respectful, and innovative learning environment that encourages creativity, risk-taking, and critical thinking
To teach strong reading comprehension, research, writing, and public speaking skills
To conduct parent-teacher conferences twice a year, and communicate as needed with parents during the year, to share insights on student progress and collaborate on support strategies
To effectively and regularly assess each student’s progress and inform the student, the parents, the academic advisor and the appropriate administrator immediately of any serious difficulty
To show concern for and nurture the student’s intellectual, social, emotional, and ethical development.
To work collaboratively in co-teaching teams, as needed and to model a growth mindset for students and colleagues
To engage in continual professional development and work closely with administration and colleagues on curriculum development and articulation
A teacher’s effectiveness in the programs of the School includes:
Attending school events such as plays, concerts, athletic events, etc., is strongly encouraged
Regular attendance at faculty meetings and open houses is expected and required
Effective classroom management and organization skills
Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach
Participation in at least one overnight field trip
Qualifications:
BA in a Humanities field
At least 3 years related teaching experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree in a Humanities field or education; California Teaching Credential
Experience teaching with the iPad and/or Canvas LMS a plus
The salary range for this 0.60 FTE position is $46,356 – $84,000 annually, commensurate with skill set and experience. This position is classified as exempt and includes an excellent benefits package, including medical/dental/vision/life insurance, a matching 403b retirement plan, and daily lunch on work days.
