Position Statement
We are seeking an experienced Academic Support Specialist to join our Upper School team.
The primary role of the Upper School Academic Support Specialist is to provide direct instruction and support to our growing, diverse population of students with learning and attention differences as they navigate our academically rigorous environment. This support and intervention may be one to one and/or in small groups, and it should be innovative, purposeful, and student centered. The Academic Specialist may also be asked to serve as a student advisor, teach a class in their academic field, or its equivalent. This position is a 10-month academic position and reports to the Dean of Academics.
Responsibilities
Maintain a climate of trust and mutual respect that encourages students to take necessary risks and make the mistakes necessary to learn.
Meet with identified students, individually and/or in small groups to provide direct instruction and remediation as needed, especially to support executive functioning needs (specifically organizational skills, project planning, essay writing, task initiation, and self-monitoring).
Review evaluations and accommodations in coordination with the Dean of Learning Support.
Collaborate with the Dean of Learning Support to create and adjust individual student learning profiles and plans.
Conduct student observations and provide feedback to teachers, administration, and parents, as appropriate.
Maintain consistent communication with the Upper School Student Support Team in order to fully support students with learning differences and/or general academic challenges.
Maintain consistent communication with parents and outside support professionals.
Support faculty in their work with students in the classroom (both identified and non identified students)
Meet with students and their parents to review individualized learning plans.
Serve on the Upper School admissions committee by interviewing prospective students, assessing applicant files, attending admissions committee meetings, and when appropriate, coordinate with the Dean of Learning Support in communicating with prospective parents whose child has a learning difference
Work with our Lower and Middle School Learning Specialists to continue to develop our K-12 Learning Support Program
Qualifications
Bachelors or Masters Degree in Special Education and/or Minimum of three years of experience working with students who have learning differences, colleagues, and parents
Student-centered, thoughtful, and proactive approach to supporting the academic development of adolescents
Experience interpreting Neuropsychological Evaluations as well as conducting screenings of students with suspected learning or attention differences
Experience with educational technology, specifically assistive technology and/or learning management systems (ex: Canvas)
Creative and energetic thinker with the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and students
Excellent organizational and time-management skills to support an ever-evolving student meeting schedule
Strong writing, editing, and organizational skills (whether digital or traditional) and ability to teach these skills to high school students
Preferred Qualifications
California Learning Specialist Credential or Educational Therapist certification
Expertise in executive function support, as well as lower level math (Algebra/Geometry) and science (Physics/Chemistry)
Compensation
The salary range for this position is $68,800 – $93,000 annually, commensurate with skill set and experience. This position is classified as exempt and includes an excellent benefits package, including medical/dental/vision/life insurance, a matching 403b retirement plan, and daily lunch on work days.
