The Nueva School

The school competes in the West Bay Athletic League and Private School Athletic League of the Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation.  The school offers boys and girls and middle and upper school programs including basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, cross country, track and field, flag football, golf, and swimming and diving.  Physical education programs include conditioning, yoga, climbing, and strength training.  Facilities include a combination of school owned on campus and leased off campus facilities.  The school’s student athletes and teams have competed highly successfully, including winning team and individual league and section championships and top team and individual placings at state as well as excelling in outside sports ranging from speed skating to dressage, squash, fencing, sport climbing, lacrosse, and crew, to name just a few.

Position Summary and Primary Responsibilities

The PK-12 Athletics and Physical Education (PE) Director will:

  • Oversee the interscholastic athletics, club sports, and PE programs that comprise the comprehensive health and wellness, sound body and sound mind, PK-12 program across all divisions and both campuses of the school.
  • Identify and support strategic sports and activities, help hire coaches and other staff, identify and manage on/off site facilities, ensure appropriate uniforms and equipment, coordinate scheduling, ensure transportation, lead and manage parent volunteers, budget, manage league memberships and relations, ensure appropriate professional development in their organizations, etc.
  • Ensure that all students have (and all coaches deliver) meaningful and successful interscholastic athletics, club sports, and physical education experiences consistent with Nueva’s health, wellness, and resiliency goals as well as PCA and league values for skills development and competitive success
  • Ensure comprehensive and coordinated lower, middle, and upper school programs of skill development and competitive success with appropriate school and division leadership and staff.
  • Support the range, from beginner to championship caliber and university scholarship eligible scholar athletes and teams.  Value participation, development, performance, and competitive success.
  • Supervise the PK-12 athletics and PE assistant director, other athletics and PE administrators, trainer(s), coaches, and staff.
  • Collaborate with division directors to oversee PE faculty hiring, feedback, development, meetings, and scope and sequence of PE curriculum.
  • Coach and teach as time, qualifications, needs, and interests require and permit.
  • Collaborate with School administration; division administration, faculty, and staff; parents; student athletes; and parent booster club.
  • Represent the programs across all divisions and be a visible regular presence on both campuses.    Represent the school in local, league, regional, state, and national associations and responsibilities.
  • Coordinate with admissions, college counseling, advancement, parent association, and parent booster club in identifying, recruiting, and supporting student athletes and in communicating internally and externally the athletics and PE philosophy, program, and successes.
  • Manage seasonal hiring, onboarding, and supervision of employee and contract coaches.
  • Manage operating and capital budgets in conjunction with the business office.
  • Maintain all appropriate coach, student athlete, and competition / school records.
  • Report to Associate Head of School and work closely with the Head of School and Division Directors.

Position Qualifications

  • University undergraduate (or higher) degree.
  • Demonstrated mastery and accomplishments in athletics at the secondary and/or university levels.
  • Demonstrated teaching and/or coaching experience in secondary, university, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including at least 5 years as an Athletic Director at the secondary or college level.
  • Demonstrated experience in hiring and professional development.
  • Demonstrated excellent organizational, communication, and follow through skills.
  • Commitment to diversity.

This is a full-time, salaried, and benefited position available for hire effective July 1, 2018.
