The Nueva School

The Nueva School

Middle School Writing and Humanities Teacher – 2020-21

The Position

Nueva seeks an experienced educator to teach writing and humanities in the middle school. The writing course emphasizes both creative and expository forms. Fictional and non-fictional mentor texts act as inspiration as students produce pieces in multiple genres. An emphasis on literary analysis builds student fluency and communication skills. The Humanities course focuses on critical and creative thinking, teaching students to use the language of the discipline to understand the human experience with the elements of depth and complexity.

In writing, texts like Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street and I Am Malala, serve to inspire integrated creative projects. Poetry and Shakespeare might both be analyzed and experimented with as mentor texts for students to base their own writing upon. Health permitting, a whole-class trip to Ashland Oregon’s Shakespeare Festival or the Chaco Canyon Archeological site pueblos serve as major highlights and organizing principles.

In humanities, students learn the language of the discipline and build the thinking skills of an historian. Students explore topics such as sustainable development, the impacts of colonization, American social movements, and Renaissance European beliefs through discussion and project work.

Teaching with an interdisciplinary lens is valued, as is connecting with faculty in other disciplines, to help students understand how the humanities and language arts are necessarily connected to other fields of study. We look for innovative, energetic, and flexible team players with the ability to work with adults and students in a collegial setting. All full time teachers act as advisors and need to be able to create an advisory experience for. Ability to teach additional electives, lead a weekly literature club, and chaperone off-campus experiences is also required.

Our goal is to teach students who will grow up to make choices to benefit the world. With this in mind, all student learn skills and knowledge connected to Social and Emotional Learning, Design Thinking, and Social Justice, Equity and Inclusion PreK-12. Excellent candidates will have strengths in all three domains. A Nueva education develops a student’s skills to work at the nexus of these three lenses on the world.
