The School

At Park Day School, expert teachers and dedicated staff are committed to the enterprise of providing a place where students learn deeply, think creatively, act compassionately, and live fully.  Founded in 1976, Park Day offers an outstanding co-educational K-8 program to over 300 students. The school community embraces the ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic diversity of Oakland. The school is rooted in the tenets of progressive education and reinforces 21st Century learning. Our student-centered approach cultivates deep thinkers and compassionate and courageous people who shape a more equitable and sustainable world. Park Day is a leader in public purpose initiatives; our community outreach program collaborates with public schools and community groups to create meaningful service-learning opportunities for our students.

Located in the Temescal neighborhood of Oakland, the school is situated on a four-acre campus that has been described as “glorious” and “a jewel” with trees,gardens, and quiet niches as well as outdoor play and athletic facilities; it is a campus for all ages. Park Day has become a leader in developing innovative educational connections between campus and classroom, including our living labs, specialized learning gardens, nature zone, chicken coop, and edible gardens.

Position Overview

Working with the Head of School, the Middle School Director leads 120 students, their families, and our Middle School faculty and staff in the delivery of a rich, progressive program that helps our students think creatively, learn deeply, act compassionately and live fully throughout their Middle School experience and prepares them to thrive in high school, college and beyond.  


  • Ensure the care and quality of our progressive model of education for Middle School students and teachers
  • Lead, support and evaluate the development of MS faculty and staff, individually and collectively
  • Participate in the recruitment and selection of MS faculty and staff
  • Promote and support MS faculty professional development
  • Oversee curriculum development
  • Direct all internal and external communications and meetings for MS students, parents and faculty
  • Serve as a consultant to MS faculty in manners of classroom management, progressive teaching methods and school procedures
  • Take the lead in organizing class trips for 6th to 8th grade
  • Serve as an integral member of our Administrative leadership team, as led by the Head of School
  • Collaborate with the Lower School Director and Assistant Head of School to ensure a cohesive Kindergarten through 8th grade program
  • Promote a safe and positive learning environment by effectively building relationships, maintaining established norms of behavior, and coordinating support for students
  • Oversee the reporting of student progress
  • Participate in a variety of school-wide community functions, some of which are in the evenings and/or on weekends
  • Lead and coordinate the high school counseling process for the graduating class
  • Lead and coordinate a cohesive advisory program
  • Support MS admissions and enrollment in close collaboration with the Director of Admissions through leading tours and open houses, designing and facilitating assessment visits, serving on the middle school admissions committee, and managing retention efforts


The successful candidate will:

  • Have a proven cultural competence in a community committed to issues of diversity, equity and social justice
  • Be an experienced Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practitioner
  • Possess the ability to contribute to strategic thinking and to lead major initiatives in keeping with Park Day School’s commitment to a multicultural, inclusive community
  • Hold a master’s degree and/or other postgraduate degrees in a subject field or in a leadership area
  • Have a minimum of five years progressive teaching and leadership experience with Middle School students and teachers
  • Exhibit excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Have a command of knowledge in adolescent development and curriculum development
  • Demonstrate strong leadership and facilitative skills and a passion for people, teaching and learning
