The College Preparatory School
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time math teacher beginning in August of 2018. Candidates should have a minimum of three to five years of experience teaching math to students at the secondary or college level. Some graduate training in math is preferred. They should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment. College Prep is a community of life-long learning and actively encourages and supports the professional development of all of its members.
Full-time teachers teach four classes, with either one or two preps. Section sizes average 16 students. Math teachers work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum which is based on the Exeter Math program. Across the curriculum, teachers integrate applications, review and theory. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material designed for incremental, developmental learning. The predominant mode of instruction involves students working in cooperative groups.
Candidates should be eager to spend additional time getting to know and help students outside of the classroom. College Prep teachers also take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, mostly during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day. Teachers thrive at College Prep when they partake in the opportunities offered by a rich co-curricular program and a tightly knit school that embraces equity and inclusiveness, and actively seeks to strengthen its ties to the greater Oakland community. The salary is competitive. Benefits include medical and dental coverage, a retirement plan for eligible employees, and most pleasantly and collegially, a prepared lunch every day.
