Redwood Day School

Redwood Day is a vibrant K-8 school with over 400 students and 85+ faculty and staff all learning together on our four-acre campus in the heart of Oakland. Redwood Day is complying with Alameda County Public Health Department, Alameda County Office of Education, and California Public Health Department guidance regarding health, safety, and reopening schools during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Job Description and Desired Qualifications

The Substitute Middle School Math Teacher will partner with our 6th-7th Math teacher to coordinate and facilitate 7th and 8th grade math courses. The course load consists of three 8th grade sections and one 7th grade section, office hours,  and math learning support for students during the academic year. Each class section has approximately 20-25 students. In adherence to our stable group protocols, the Substitute Middle School Math Teacher will work with approximately 12-16 students in stable groups and up to 50 students in-person, total, each month while they teach the remainder of the stable groups virtually. Redwood Day is currently in distance learning but has plans for the 7th and 8th grade students to return to campus in December or January.

Redwood Day believes strongly in universal design or access to curriculum and learning for all students. This includes, but is not limited to – addressing differentiation, development, and social/emotional growth. Therefore the Substitute Middle School Math Teacher will have a strong commitment to meeting the learning needs of each student, a teaching style that supports differentiated instruction, a collaborative spirit, and an interest in building community. 

As a teacher in the Middle School, this individual will participate in various student and community activities, including collaborative teacher meetings. 

Essential Requirements

  • BA in math or related field
  • Classroom teaching experience in math, especially at the Middle School level
  • Candidate must have a natural rapport with children and strong classroom management skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Desired Qualifications and Traits

  • Masters in Education, or specific subject area (preferred)

Schedule and Hours

This is a substitute/leave replacement position beginning December 7, 2020, and tentatively ending March 26, 2021, though these dates are subject to change. This individual will shadow the current 7th-8th Math Teacher December 7-17, 2020, to ensure a smooth transition and become familiar with the curriculum. Regular hours are 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays). 

Compensation/Benefits:
This position is not benefits eligible and will be compensated through a third party staffing agency.
