Responsibilities

The Head-Royce Lower School is seeking a dynamic, creative educator to cultivate our garden and inspire the love of nature and respect for our environment. The garden integrationist is an integral part of the learning experience of all lower schoolers. The garden integrationist opens the garden space and supervises student exploration and garden free play. Full maintenance and upkeep of the planting beds, chicken coop and garden animals is also expected. The garden integrationist will collaborate with other teachers to plan and implement hands-on projects using the garden as the classroom. Our educational philosophy focuses on preparing students for the skills necessary to succeed as global citizens in the 21st century, including eco-literacy. We also rely on Culturally Responsive teaching applications to create a clear scope and sequence with our diversity, equity and inclusion work.

Specific Lower School Job Responsibilities/Expectations 

Supervise students in the garden during recess
Collaborate with homeroom teachers to create rich co-curricular opportunities for learning in the garden
Lead small and large group lessons and activities
Organize 2 garden festivals – Fall & Spring
Tend to the animals in the garden
Physical demands include composting, seasonal planting and maintaining the plant beds

Skills

Collaborative, collegial, and flexible teacher within the Lower School with other student-focused educators
Clear communicator with students, colleagues and parents, both orally and in writing
Possess a growth mindset, a love of learning, and patience
Practiced in differentiated instruction
Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills
Flexible in pedagogical approach, using multiple modalities to deliver a concept
Clear desire to use a variety of teaching approaches in order to reach different student populations and adapt to better serve their learning styles and needs
Demonstrated understanding of curriculum design, pedagogical approaches and developmental appropriateness in order to deliver engaging, active, student-centered lessons

Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree
Teaching experience
Knowledge of garden curriculum
Minimum 3 years experience teaching
Strong academic background, experience in multicultural education and an awareness of ecological literacy
Genuine fondness for working with students K-5
