Park Day School, founded in 1976, offers an outstanding co-educational K-8 program to over 300 students. Overview of the Art Teacher Position

Reporting to the Lower School Director, the school seeks a vibrant teacher who brings creativity and innovation to their teaching practice and a passion for the arts. The Lower School Art teacher will be responsible for all aspects of the Art curriculum for grades K – 5 with once weekly periods in the art studio for each class. Position includes art program newsletters, progress reports, parent conferences and other duties associated with the daily education of the lower school students. Class size is between 16-18 students with classroom teaching assistants accompanying the K-2 classes to art. The hiring process will include a screening interview with an administrator, with finalists returning for a second round demonstration lesson and interview with the full hiring committee.

In the Lower School Lead Art Teacher is responsible for:

  • Developing curriculum that incorporates many different forms of media (including paint, paper, fabric, paper mache, clay, metal, etc)
  • Teaching a variety of techniques and skills for creating art
  • Incorporating projects and lessons that affirm and celebrate students

    identities and cultures

  • Collaborating with the middle school art teacher, lower school music,

    Spanish, PE & learning garden specialist teachers and lead classroom

    teachers to create inter-disciplinary projects

  • Knowing and applying elements of design and principles of art
  • Organizing the art room and instructing students on appropriate and

    respectful use of materials

  • Posting art displays throughout the school during the year
  • Presenting student work at the annual spring K-8 Art Show
  • Maintaining an “open” art studio for students during one lunch recess

    period per week

    The ideal candidate will:

• Have 3-5 years lead teaching experience in art education in a school setting, a degree in Art and a single subject credential

culturally competent to build an inclusive community.

  • Have a proven track record of working successfully in a diverse student

    environment that upholds high values in social justice education and

    practices.

  • Possess a working understanding of developmental / constructivist

    teaching practices and social-emotional learning.

  • Have experience meeting a wide range of student learning styles and

    needs via multiple modalities; facile in differentiating instruction in each

    subject area.

  • Have a nurturing, supportive, and clear tone with students, and experience

    with collaborative teaching.
