The College Preparatory School

The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a full-time History teacher starting Spring semester (January 12), 2021.  This transitional position builds in time for the successful candidate to become familiar with the school and prepare to teach two classes between February 8 through April 2;  three sections of the 10th grade team taught “The Atlantic World” course (focusing on the French and Haitian revolutions as well as on term paper organization and research) and one section of our “Modern Middle East History” seminar for mostly 12th graders. The seminar offers a political and social history of the Middle East. In February and March, the course focuses on the First World War and the postwar order, the interwar years, and the Palestine Mandate. Candidates need not be experts in these particular historical moments; curriculum will already be developed and colleagues will be there to support. Starting April, this position transitions into support for History colleagues; working with students in breakout rooms, splitting teaching of sections, etc. In Fall, 2021, the position moves into a typical full-time teaching role with four sections and two preps. Candidates should have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community and be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment.

Qualifications and desired characteristics:

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in History or related field
  • Experience and/or interest in teaching across our core curriculum
  • Interest in developing a 12th grade elective seminar (such as Ethnic Studies, Environmental History, Latin American History, or other)
  • Passion for working with high school students
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor
  • A strong interest in working in a multicultural community

The College Prep history program is unique, innovative and rigorous, and includes three required year-long courses: Asian Worlds (in the 9th grade), The Atlantic World (in the 10th grade), and The U.S. and the World, taken in the junior year. History teachers work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum. Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more history electives their senior year. These include Constitutional Law, Ancient and Medieval History, Gender History, and Linguistics. History section sizes average 16 students. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes.

The school’s mission is to prepare students for productive, ethical lives in college and beyond by fostering a stimulating education within an atmosphere of consideration, trust, and mutual responsibility.
