The College Preparatory School
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a Biology / A.P. Environmental Science / Chemistry substitute teacher. This position is ½ time starting February 15, 2019 and becomes full-time April 8 until early June, 2019. It entails teaching two sections of Chemistry (starting February 1) and expands to include one section of A.P. Biology and one section of A.P. Environmental Science (from April 8 until early June).
Qualifications and desired characteristics:
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences or related fields
- Experience teaching the sciences at either the high school or college level
- Passion for working with high school students in the sciences
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor
- A strong interest in working in a multicultural community
The College Prep science program is unique, innovative and rigorous, and includes three required year-long courses: Physics (in the 9th grade), Chemistry (in the 10th grade), and Biology, taken in the junior year at either the A.P. or honors level. Chemistry and biology teachers work closely with one another, honing and reshaping the curriculum. Beyond required courses, the vast majority of our students choose to take one or more science electives. These include A.P. Physics, A.P. Chemistry and semester electives such as Astrophysics, Issues in Science, Organic Chemistry and Geology. Section sizes average 16 students. Students use both texts and teacher-produced material in classes.
