BATTI Intern (2nd Grade)                           

100% FTE, Starts August 7, 2020
Reports to: Lower School Head

Overview of BATTI Intern Position

We seek an Intern eager to work with lesson plans based on the  SFS Mission and  Educational Philosophy. Teaching duties include work with individual children and small groups, overseeing class activities, and planning and teaching select lessons throughout the school year.  Supervisory duties include oversight of children and managing student behaviors during lunch, singing time, recess, carpool, and Extended Day.  Responsibilities also include communicating observations and insights to lead teachers; correcting student work; keeping the classroom supplied and organized; and preparing materials (word processing, photocopying, etc.).

 

Expectations:

The Intern works under the guidance of classroom teachers, collaborating to inspire students with a multicultural, unbiased and meaningful curriculum. Interns support Head Teachers with instruction and smooth operation of the classroom. Interns may be scheduled to take on Head Teacher responsibilities (at key times of the day or week, or in Head Teachers’ absence). Interns offer P.M. Extended Day classes they are passionate about sharing with Elementary and/or Middle School students. The BATTI Intern collaborates with the Head Teachers to manage the classroom environment; work with children on academic, social and emotional growth; and track and maintain records for each child.

Job Requirements

  • Experience with elementary students; compassionate and energetic guide for children
  • Proven cultural competence in a community committed to issues of diversity, equity and social justice
  • Sensitivity to the needs of individual children with differing learning styles
  • Understanding of developmental needs of elementary students
  • Strong organizational, collaboration, and communication skills
  • Initiative, responsibility, adaptability, creativity, and flexibility
  • A stand up comedian, or at least has a good sense of humor

 

General Calendar and Schedule

  • The Intern engages in transition, preparation and orientation activities from August 7 through August 18, 2020.
  • The Intern engages in direct work with the children from August 19 through May 27, with wrap up activities through June 3, 2021.  A typical school-day schedule is eight hours (generally 7:30am to 3:30pm) which includes: up to six hours of student contact, co-teacher and team collaboration, one hour of preparation time, and one hour for lunch and breaks.
  • Hours: 8:00 am to 4:00 pm (may be adjusted as master schedule is finalized).

 

Qualifications sought

The candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Education or a subject area field.

  • Proven cultural competence in a community committed to issues of diversity, equity and social justice.
  • Be passionate about and enjoy working with young children.
  • Ability to supervise and mentor students in ways relevant to this commitment.
  • Demonstrated academic and multicultural competence in classroom pedagogy, including innovative teaching and recognition of and appropriate response to various learning profiles.
  • Experience with Contexts for Learning Math and Readers & Writers Workshop is a plus but is not required.
  • Candidate should be student-centered, practiced in differentiated instruction and skilled at attending to the development of the whole child.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience with the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with all constituents in an evolving multicultural, economically diverse school environment, including faculty, staff, administration, parents, and students.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Demonstrated professional behavior, including discretion, judgment and integrity.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in a teaching team.
  • Commitment to the continuing development of relevant professional knowledge, skills and abilities, particularly as related to academic and cultural competencies.
  • All prospective employees must be able to clear a background check and TB screening.
  • Understanding of developmental needs of 6-8 year olds.
  • Exhibit initiative, responsibility, adaptability, creativity, and flexibility.
