Bishop O’Dowd High School (O’Dowd) www.bishopodowd.org is a nationally recognized Catholic college preparatory school known for its high quality graduates and academics, outstanding student support programs, warm and joyful school culture, strong co-curricular programs, and innovations in environmental science and the use of technology to improve learning.

General Description:

O’Dowd’s long-standing athletic tradition is defined by its commitment to excellence in the development of scholar-athletes. O’Dowd has been consistently ranked in the top ten of nearly 175 North Coast Section independent and public schools for academic and athletic excellence. Over 700 students participate in interscholastic athletics and our top scholars make up a large portion of our outstanding athletes.

Reporting directly to the Associate Principal of Student Life, the Athletic Director exercises leadership for O’Dowd’s (Grades 9 to 12) athletic programming, including alignment with the school’s mission and charism. O’Dowd seeks a transformational leader who is an effective communicator, and is committed to developing and enacting a long-term vision for O’Dowd athletics. The Athletic Director must be comfortable addressing all constituencies, including students, parents, colleagues, and potential students and families. The Athletic Director must bring a commitment to building connected programs in every sport, helping student athletes develop their individual skills while also creating a positive dynamic within each team and sport. O’Dowd seeks someone who will be a transformative leader to reimagine how athletics aligns with our mission and charism towards a co-curricular program committed to character development, and the development and support of student advocacy.

The Athletic Director should have significant coaching experience and an interest in supporting the growth and development of O’Dowd coaches. Lastly, O’Dowd athletics is an integral part of our community and therefore must align in spirit and philosophy with our mission and charism.

Responsibilities will include:

Athletic Department: The Athletic Director is responsible for leading, hiring and evaluating a department of five that consists of an Assistant Director, Head Athletic Trainer, Assistant Athletic Trainer, Head Strength and Conditioning Coach and an administrative support person.

  • Maintain a positive working relationship with the academic faculty and all other members of the school and greater community.
  • Hold monthly department meetings.
  • Meet with families and head coaches as needed to resolve concerns or conflicts.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications to ensure the school website reflects current programming.
  • Annual review and update as needed of the athletic handbook.
  • Responsible for managing the team apparel stores.

Student Athletes: The Athletic Director is responsible for ensuring student athletes adhere to the mission and charism of O’Dowd. Specifically, the Athletic Director is accountable for the following:

  • Ensuring the academic success, safety, and well-being of the student athletes.
  • Teaching and developing strength of character and sportsmanship.
  • Monitoring academic eligibility of all student athletes, in partnership with the Director of Academic Support.
  • Ensuring academic supports are provided when/if needed.
  • Coordinating, with the support of team families, end-of-season banquets and Senior Nights. 

Coaches: The Athletic Director is responsible for coordinating the hiring process and managing athletic coaches. Specifically, the Athletic Director is accountable for the following:

  • Recruiting, interviewing, screening, and recommending qualified persons to fill coaching assignments.
  • Directing advising, evaluating and supervising all athletic coaching staff.
  • Orienting all coaches regarding school policies, procedures, and expectations.
    • Coordinate seasonal all coaches meetings – professional development and community building.
  • Ensuring all coaches comply with CIF and league rules, the O’Dowd employee handbook and procedures.
  • Encouraging professional growth opportunities for coaches.

Game Preparation and Management: The Athletic Director is responsible for ensuring athletic teams are prepared for competitions. Specifically, the Athletic Director is accountable for the following:

  • Coordinating transportation for athletic teams.
  • Contracting officials for appropriate athletic contests.
  • Recruiting and assigning personnel, faculty and staff to work as ticket sellers, ticket takers, crowd supervisors, scorers, timers, announcers and for other game management duties as needed.
  • Initiating requisitions for the issuance of checks for officials, supervisory personnel, transportation, and entry fees.
  • Reviewing crowd control assignments with all supervisors, including police officers (in collaboration with the Director of Campus Security as needed).
  • Identifying and coordinating tournaments.
  • Securing permits for use of practice and game facilities.
  • Coordinating award ceremonies and presentations.

Budget, Equipment and Facilities: The Athletic Director is responsible for establishing and managing the athletic budget, equipment, and facilities. Specifically, the Athletic Director is accountable for the following:

  • Creating a three to five year strategic plan and budget for athletics.
    • Planning and overseeing the yearly athletic budget.
  • Supporting the development office with alumni and community engagement.
  • Ensuring each coach maintains an accurate inventory of equipment and materials and develops a long-range equipment replacement plan.
  • Overseeing athletic facilities so that the facilities are prepared for practices and contests.
  • Conducting an annual review of our athletic facilities and identifying capital athletic needs to the Associate Principal of Student Life.
  • Coordinating with the chair of the physical education department to secure sports lockers for students in season.

California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), WACC League: The Athletic Director is responsible for working with the CIF, school league, and partners to establish and maintain athletic programs and ensure compliance with rules and regulations. Specifically, the Athletic Director is accountable for the following

  • Verifying the eligibility of athletes.
  • Serving as the representative at athletic meetings for all schools.
  • Collaborating with the coaches to develop master schedules for all sports and levels.
  • Disseminating CIF materials and ensuring all coaches comply with CIF rules and procedures.

Evaluation:

The Associate Principal of Student Life will evaluate the Athletic Director each year. The evaluation will be based on the duties and responsibilities listed above.

Other duties as assigned by the Associate Principal of Student Life.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited college or university.
  • Successful coaching experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated project management abilities.
  • Proven collaborator and organizational leader.
