The College Preparatory School
The College Preparatory School, an independent high school in Oakland, California, seeks a three-quarter time teacher of acting and drama beginning in August of 2019. This position entails teaching one section of Acting each semester and the direction of one drama production (including a bi-yearly musical production) each semester. Qualifications and desired characteristics:
- Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Theatre Arts or related fields
- Experience teaching the craft of acting to students at the secondary school or college level
- Experience directing drama productions at the secondary school or college level
- Strong collaborative, organizational and communication skills
- Interest in integrating technology in ways that enhance students’ learning and growth
- Passion for lifelong learning, professional growth, leadership and community building
- Patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor
- A strong interest in working in a multicultural community
The Acting class has up to 16 participants per semester and serves as a preparation to the world of theatre. Candidates should be prepared to teach monologue, scene work and improvisation, and to stress problem-solving, group communication, creativity and teamwork. Drama productions have included a range of genres (musicals, comedies, contemporary and classical dramas, etc.) and always stress close collaboration with students and staff members within different arts disciplines (theatre tech, visual arts and photo, dance and music, as appropriate). Drama students meet and rehearse at the end of the school day; candidates should be prepared to oversee some evening rehearsals as production time nears. The three-quarter time drama person would be expected to be on campus starting mid-morning through late afternoon rehearsals. College Prep teachers take a share of departmental, chaperoning, advising and general school responsibilities.
