St. Paul’s Episcopal School, located across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, enrolls 380 students from diverse backgrounds in Kindergarten-Grade 8. Seventh and Eighth Grade Learning Specialist Responsibilities: – 15 hours per week

Possible schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday – 10:30am-2:30pm plus flexible time to adjust for parent meetings, phone calls, etc.

 

The responsibilities of the Learning Specialist include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with faculty to identify students who are having academic difficulties and who may be in need of learning support.
  • Create dynamic and supportive care plans for students who are receiving extra support.
  • Observe students in and outside of class in order to provide feedback to teachers, parents, and principals to better serve the needs of the students.
  • Collaborate effectively with teachers in order to implement recommended classroom accommodations and interventions.
  • Case management of students with learning differences. This can include: identifying students who need psychoeducational testing, Educational Therapy, Tutoring, extra in-class instruction, Educational Care plans, and engaging in discussions of school fit.
  • Make referrals to appropriate outside specialists.
  • Create and maintain documentation regarding students who receive services. Present to teachers and administrators at yearly and monthly meetings. This includes summaries of the students’ learning disabilities, learning strengths, and type of support being offered. Share updated plans and meeting notes with families and teachers.
  • Review screenings and evaluations, and create a support plan that is informed by the testing. Share this information with parents, teachers, and administrators.
  • Provide professional development for teachers.
  • Attend grade level meetings and follow up on any recommendations for action that arise at those meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with parents on a regular basis regarding students’ needs and/or progress.
  • Attendi regular weekly division faculty meetings.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Educational Care, the Division Directors, and the Head of the school.
  • Coordinate with After School Care to find on-site tutoring spaces for students.
  • Monitor work with Educational Therapists and tutors to make sure their support is on target and that it is helping the students make progress.
  • Work with students one on one or in small groups during study halls to support learning needs. Teach an elective study skills class in executive function and organization.

 

Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in classroom teaching and a Masters degree in learning disabilities or a related field and will be able to provide at least 3 professional references.
